Quote from: aitm on December 24, 2025, 10:12:49 AMAsk 100 people from which direction does the sun "rise" and about 60 will get it right. But ask them which direction the earth rotates and they just stand there perplexed. Some will spin around and some will wave their hands in the air.

No spinning or waving here, but I had to think about it for about 2 seconds before I came up with towards the sunrise. So west to east.
Save a life. Adopt a Greyhound.

New York sees sun before LA. So the planet turn left to right. The west to east thing just confuses some people. I don't think they could point to "west" at any given moment.
We 'new atheists' have a reputation for being militant, but make no mistake  we didn't start this war. If you want to place blame put it on the the religious zealots who have been poisoning the minds of the  young for a long long time."

It would be nice, if they made a hologram moving around in air at visible height, lol...

Quote from: Gawdzilla Sama on December 24, 2025, 05:51:17 AMPhilosophically, yes. But geographically it made a great impression on the old Europeans. Columbus was looking for a shorter route to the "Spice Islands", southeastern Asia and associated land masses. Spherical geometry was not his strong suit.

'Philosophically', without the Ancient Greek culture there would have been no Ancient Roman culture and most importantly, as a result No Renaissance. And that means, no advancement in navigation, not ay kind of scientific and ideation, (imagination if you will) boost required to explore the world. No Copernic, Galileo or Kepler... No scientific revolution in the future.

It's probable that the discovery of Americas would have been delayed a very long time, and in that time it would have been accomplished by other cultures. No colonisation to feed Europe. Without that colonisation basic natural sciences would have been delayed a long time too. No Darwin. So after no astronomy and no geography... Also no botany, no entomology, no anthropology and finally no evolution theory soon.

The Western culture as we know it, wouldn't have existed. So philosophically, the east or west make the whole difference in the time line we live. We don't know anything else.

The civilisation we live in do not require us to know in which direction the sun rise or set in accordance to survive. But it requires us to know how we got here to keep a civilised society based on law to live in. This is how anti-intellectualism have risen. Loss of historical perspective, thinking certain aspects of human development is not relevant anymore. Unfortunately it is. More than ever now, I dare to say.

Also you're depressing me.

OR some other culture would have come up with all that. We just guessin', ain't we.

But we are talking about the one and the only that happened. And we know how it happened, it is not a guess or a coincidence. That's what I'm trying to say.

While I am a great fan of speculative alternatives to the present day state of affairs. Heinlein got me going on that back in 1965.

Cheers.

I usually follow up with, the earth turns counter clockwise-wise. They just say oh. Then I laugh and say, unless you live in Australia. Now they are really confused. 😁

The reindeer can't possibly shit on every roof. I wonder what the statistics are? 🤔

A friend just gave me a book by Heinlein that I don't know if I've read before. If I have, it's been decades. It's called Expanded Universe.
I'm going to celebrate the holiday by reading it today and the rest of the weekend. It's 582 pages, so I won't finish it today. 🤓
