Back in the '80s my ship, a cruiser, was escort for USS Midway, an aircraft carrier, based out of Japan. We got the word that we were going to conduct a "freedom of navigation" exercise. The Sovs had just declared ALL of the Bering Sea their property, no-go zone for not Soviets. So we headed up north.
... (three days travel time)
We're up there, tottling around under a heavy overcast. We knew the Soviets were tracking up via satellite, when they could. But happily for them the overcast broke and there was USS Midway in their "private ocean".

There were also three other USN carriers with us. Surprise. The Sovs didn't enforce their no-go rule. Don't know why.
