It was a much nicer place when it was more of a privilege to be there.  A certain amount of courtesy was assumed and people wouldn't give you the time of day if you were a douche canoe.

Now, the base expectations are basically nonexistent, there's a lot less fear of being shunned, and there are plenty of tools in place to actively aid being as non-humane as possible and plenty of communities that'll reward you for it.  And with the proliferation of bots/AI, there's actually less of a human connection now than ever.

True. People pretty much interacted with each other often enough to get to know each other on the old internet. Forums like these are practically extinct now. Even on Facebook, which was originally for keeping up with people you personally knew, you'll mostly interact with random strangers. Or bots. Discord can serve a similar niche, as long as the server doesn't get too big.

Also, it's really difficult to notice changelings and the other time was when he had a goatee.  I thought he just decided to grow a goatee.  A goatee doesn't necessarily mean anything in itself.  But that parasitic insect that makes you eat mealworms, yeah, I definitely should have noticed that.  😓
