And if you just leave them you'll stand a chance of killing the grass and thus avoiding having to mow it in the Spring. Plan!

In my neck of the woods, there are few trees near lawns.  The majority line the curb and islands in the street without grass, just pine needles and now leaves.  There are also wooded areas intentionally undeveloped.

By all means, if it's necessary to rake, go ahead and rake.  I just like to see the undeveloped parts of the neighborhood stay as untouched as possible.

This  house, and a few hundred like it, was built in the late 1960s. Nothing grows wild around here without the connivance of the custodians of that piece of ground.

BUT to the west I have the Missouri River. To the east the Mississippi (Big Muddy) River. Ozarks to the south. Plenty of wild here. And 116 miles north is Hannibal, where Samuel Clemens, writing as "Mark Twain", lived when he was a boy.

Easy to get to wild here. I used volunteer at the Endangered Wolf Center just west of St. Louis. Guiding tours I'd put my back to an enclosure and talk to the guests about the African (Wild) (Painted) Hunting Dogs we had. I explained that the dogs could make a full grown deer disappear in under fifteen minutes, right down to the pelvis. I could tell how close the dogs were by the increasing panic on the faces of the guests.
