There's some variety in how they do it.  Some bird species do it intentionally, others just go spread eagle and let the ants crawl all over them (but shake them off once they start crawling on their head).  European starlings eat the ant.  And some birds use all sorts of other species as substitutes for the ant, including snails and even wasps.
