Which game are you referring to??

Civ2.  I mentioned not being online with that because using Win 95/98 online is not safe without updates and updates would mean I couldn't play Civ2.  That was the whole point of buying a Win 95 computer.

Yeah, I loved Civ 2, as well.  But I did not think of buying an old computer.  But, why not? :)

Seems like it would be easier to use an emulator or a virtual machine. Old computers aren't exactly something you can pick up at the corner store.

I'm sure you are right.  I haven't looked into it. Yet.

Available on ebay $70 and below.  A minor investment, and if you stay offline, no threats.  Buy the multiplayer edition on Amazon, most bugs were fixed.  I think it treats stacked units funny, but I seldom to that.  Of course, you could get the original and patch it online , but it really isn't worth it the threat of some hack-ass finding you.

Yeah, I prefer to as much offline as I can.

Another year, another FIFA I won't be buying until it's like $20 because they have done literally shit-all to improve the gameplay.

It's literally been the exact same mechanic wise for a good 6 years now when they switched over to the Frostbite engine.

Does Civ2 work in Windows XP?

You can use a VM and run it sandboxed inside a Windows XP VM. And once you've installed the Windows XP inside the VM environment you can mount Civ2 as an .iso

Or just buy an ancient computer.

Angry Joe has a great rant about exactly that.

I looked around.  Some people say yes, others no.  Some people say that some partitions work, others say that some programs revert XP for some games.  I could never make those work.  I followed the instructions with no success.  Getting an old computer was far more direct, LOL!

I got it to work:

I installed Virtualbox 6.0.10
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

Got a Windows XP .iso from
https://softlay.net/operating-system/windows-xp-sp3-iso-full-version-free-download.html

Which took me some 40 minutes to install on the VM, I also disabled networking in the settings. An article which gives the rundown on the installation of the VM and the Windows XP .iso is:
https://www.groovypost.com/howto/setup-a-virtual-machine-to-run-older-or-incompatible-software-on-windows-10/

Then I just copied  (from a shared folder inside the VM) the Civ2 gold edition multiplayer from
https://gamesnostalgia.com/en/download/sid-meiers-civilization-ii/2473

---

Took a while to get it up and running, but it runs smoothly.

OUTSTANDING!  Have you played it before (I forget)?

The first day I got the game, I played for 36 hours over a weekend and called in sick at work Monday.  As an atheist, I refused to build Temples until I realized that I couldn't progress without them in each city.  That SERIOUSLY annoyed me, but game rules are game rules so I did after that.

What are your favorite Wonders?

I used to play Civ2 BIMD, my favorite wonders are also the few first one you can build. Mainly the Pyramids and the Oracle.
