QuoteFact: That is a full-fledged Urban Legend, with no basis in fact whatever. This legend is so widespread that many people believe it who should really know better, including some teachers and TV documentary producers. Three different unrelated groups are called "daddy-longlegs." Harvestmen have no venom of any kind.
We 'new atheists' have a reputation for being militant, but make no mistake  we didn't start this war. If you want to place blame put it on the the religious zealots who have been poisoning the minds of the  young for a long long time."

Greenville?  But I already have a town called Greenville!

Quote from: Dark Lightning on March 07, 2023, 10:26:39 PMWell. The various "widow" spiders are fair game around here. But I leave the more poisonous but less threatening "daddy long legs" spiders their space in my garage, since they out-compete the widows, which bite can actually hurt a human.

Dark Lightning

"daddy long legs" was in quotes because they are cellar spiders (which I know), but most people seem to call them that.

They're also not particularly venomous. Adam Savage on Mythbusters had one bite him to little ill effect and the examined toxin was no where near as potent as black widows.

Jeez, I used to watch this a bunch when I was a little kid, but I don't recall this song. I mostly remember "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" and that guy who laughed so much he was floating in the air. 😆

No one should ever give a cat anything to grudge about...it could be quite dangerous! 😾

Greenville?  But I already have a town called Greenville!

I'll keep this in mind when writing my book. Naming things is hard. Much easier to just say, "Oh, this place? This is Miner Town. We call it that because it's built next to a mine. For some reason, we get a bunch of creepy visitors here who are always disappointed. Don't know why."

Fuck, that's good. I'm using that one. lol

Born under one law, to another bound;
Vainly begot, and yet forbidden vanity,
Created sick, commanded to be sound."

The sounds words create are often more important than the meaning of the words when naming things in my opinion. And of course what those sounds evoke in people. It's conventional. The first obvious ones that come to mind:

Gandalf - Saruman --- Gryffindor - Slytherin --- Ged

But of course, breaking the rules creatively and effectively would give the best results as usual, I think.
