Soviet spies, including the obligatory Mata Hari clone, try to steal some damn thing. Good guys win, didn't see that coming.

I like he title with that one because they didn't understand that Jules Verne was referring to the distance traveled while underwater, not the depth they reached. The ocean is deep, but not quite that deep.

I was in the fifth grade when I hit that bump. Teacher explained it to me.

Shang-Chi, surprisingly really good. Great choreography that shows it's heavy influence on the old Hong Kong cinema, mixing modern fights, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" mythical flying fights influenced by various traditional martial arts, and even some Jackie Chan humor-influenced fights.

Stories good, main-bad is actually surprisingly well done for a Marvel villain imo. Surprised how under-the-radar this one went.

Sir Run-Run Shaw created the Hong Kong Dong movies. "You have two weeks to film. If you're not done you still have to clear the studios for the next epic."

Gf fell asleep midway through the phantom menace.

"Not as good as the others you showed me." She said before dozing off.

They had to pack in several origin stories. It was a intro to the rest of  the movies. I think it did its job.

I both like it and hate it. The pod racing stuff was one of its better ideas. Seeing more streamlined looking star ships made me wonder how technology moved backwards, since this is supposed to be a prequel, but I still like the designs.

I really don't like how young they made Anakin. He should have been the same age as Luke was in A New Hope. When the Jedi Counsel says he's too old to be taken in, I'm like, "Too old? Do you take all of your Jedi straight from the cradle? Da fuq?" It also makes a mess of things with his love interest, who is clearly a grown woman when they first meet. They look the same age in later movies, but according to this one, she's got like ten years on him.

I love Darth Maul's design, but his portrayal was very boring. He had practically no lines, no personality. Fortunately, the Clone Wars series would later redeem the character, but The Phantom Menace didn't do the character justice.

I don't find Jar Jar as annoying as others do. He's irritating, yes, and his humor is juvenile. But when people complain about him, I always think back to the original trilogy, and how they had a walking rug who communicated exclusively through growls. I find them equally annoying. Which would you rather watch, the Gungan parts of The Phantom Menace or the Christmas Special? The latter had a lot of things wrong with it, but the number one reason it should never have been made is because having an entire cast of characters who just growl at each other is...just painfully stupid.

I think it did it's job in a boring way.

There were things I liked. Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson...
But I really think Jar Jar is not a good character, to put it lightly. The idea that C3PO was built by Anakin also seems needlessly shoehorned in. And they had two whole episode to find a better place for him to come in naturally, if they wanted to. It didn't have to be in episode one. Especially if they already took on so much.
Also, the CGI was good at the time. But... maybe as an adult, maybe after being spoiled for years with increasingly better CGI, it is starting to look worse. To me, at least.

The pacing of the story is slow. Slower than the other films, and it shows even more due to it being interrupted by faster-paced and flashier bursts of action than the originals had.

Anakin is way too young for Padme.
Though, yes, Blackleaf; the Jedi took in babies. Once even got sued for kidnapping one.
So he was too old for the order.

Maul is cool, but fleeting.
The trade federation is boring.

... I could go on.
There were things it did right. But few and far in between, imho.

See, this is why I've given up on Star Wars. Right here. Conversations like this one.

Yeah, I never found that argument all that convincing; like people forgot Ewoks were a thing.
My problem with him is... he is kinda really racist, like the Nemonians or w/e the trade federation race is... like Mickey Rooney in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" bad.

Ewoks were cool enough. They were very silly, yes. And their abiltiy to take down the emperor´s top squadron is overreached. But they were competent enough in their own way. And you are watching a space fantasy story about laserswordwielding wizardknights. So it didn´t take me out of the story, Personally. And at least they weren´t up in your face, constantly interjecting and slowing the story in favor of poorly excecuted slapstick or whining.
Same with chewbacca.
