Serious study of the Bible in the original languages; Judaism in antiquity; Early Christianity; Church History and Biblical Archaeology will lead you further and further from evangelical Christianity. The Empirical evidence contradicts the faith. Keep going down that road and you'll end up like me: free.

You should start by studying Biblical Archaeology. Take a trip to Israel and volunteer on an archaeological dig. Ask a Biblical Archaeologist about the evidence for the Exodus, and for the conquering of the Promised Land under Joshua. Find a solid Christian believer (lots of Biblical Archaeologists are Christians) just to make sure that you're not being led astray by some godless scientist.

Then come back and tell us what you learned.

I hope this can contribute to a better image of my GOD in your minds. When I learned this truth, was the moment I was truly proud of the GOD I was serving. A God of Mercy!

I know that many believers and atheists alike have a picture of what the afterlife and hell look like - a place of eternal torment and pain.  I have come to the conclusion that this is not so. Coming to the conclusion that hell is NOT a place of eternal suffering and torment, made me even more comfortable with the God that I serve.
