I've visited Charleston vicariously, with Google Earth, but otherwise I have no knowledge of it, because I was adopted at 3 yo, and was made to leave.

Cradle of the Civil War, despite what Simon sings in this exceptionally good song.

Rainbow Row is worth a look, especially from the water. You can also get good eel from that area (Monk's Corner), or so I'm told.  I had some in Paris the first time. Not a real fan.

Quote from: Nobody on July 19, 2025, 12:04:03 PMAh, yes, Charleston, SC, the beautiful city where I was born that I have absolutely no memory of.
I was there a couple of years ago.  It's a nice area, though that's largely due to a combination of slavery and trade (one of the most notable things being traded were slaves, so there's a substantial amount of overlap).  The aristocracy lived in Charleston proper, which is quite pleasant due to an ever-present breeze (the natives were quite fond of the "healing wind" of the area, which largely repelled the mosquitos, according to the tour guide).

It was also briefly blockaded by Blackbeard before he left for much more agreeable conditions in North Carolina, sparking a trend that continues to this very day.

The Gibbes Museum of Art is quite lovely and has some impressive 18th and 19th century artworks.

And lastly, there's an inconspicuous Thai restaurant in a shopping mall and I came there with severe hunger and thirst (Un bon repas doit commencer par la faim) and it was the best food I've ever had in my entire life - salty, spicy, and savory - fragrant, juicy, and hot.  I would've wept from happiness were I not already weeping from a particularly spicy tom yum.  I highly recommend, though pace yourself!  The stomach knows its desire, but not its capacity!

Nice 21st C. art there in the middle.

If you watch Inside Job with the feelings of current events, it feels like real life. I don't know how to describe that. But it's surreal. I mean real. Whatever.
"his philosophy was a mixture of three famous schools -the cynics, the stoics and the epicureans-and summed up all three of them in his famous phrase, 'you can't trust any bugger further than you can throw him, and there's nothing you can do about it, so let's have a drink.'" terry pratchett

This is probably going to be my next show:

Very much a misfit antiheroes vibe to it, which naturally lends itself to humor and snarky banter.  Voice acting by Matt Mercer (naturally), Jonathan Frakes, and I almost believed that the female tiefling thief was Kristen Schaal, but it's actually Laura Bailey. Could be good.

The characters themselves have a somewhat striking look to them - two tieflings, a goblin, a green guy (no idea if that's a skin condition or his great-grandfather was a lizardfolk), a goliath, and the rest appear to be humans.  Lots of leather and cloth armor.  Not big fans of heavy armor, it would seem.  Mostly martial (they better have high dodge or one hell of an opening attack, because martials + flimsy armor = dead martials), and only two casters.  Their colors are somewhat subdued/dark, with dark greens and browns featuring most prominently, with the occasional blue or burgundy.

We only see the 6 characters in the trailer, but there's a seventh in this team.  Imho, 7 is too many for an ensemble cast.  Personally, 4-6 is ideal - just enough for them to play off each other and for their characters to develop - but when you get higher than that, it gets tricky give them all something to do and have the time to develop them all - they tend to split up a lot.  We'll see if they can pull it off.

Looks like the usual suspects.

I just saw a pretty interesting theory about Star Trek (warning: spoilers for TOS, TNG, and Picard, but the first two are older than the worldwide web and the last one is quite frankly not worth even a single viewing)

Starfleet has quite a few encounters with robots/AI, but only a rare few truly sentient androids were developed in the Federation and it's interesting that there are just two one-offs (invented by Noonien Soong or Bruce Maddox and literally no one else).  So it raises the question as why only these two cracked the code.  Perhaps the answer lies in our next odd factoid:  long ago, sentient androids were also developed in the Andromeda Galaxy, and they survived the deaths of their creators.

The theory is that these events are interconnected: Andromedan technology may have found its way into the Milk Way, where very rarely, some one-in-a-generation genius is able to cobble together alien and Federation tech to create sentient androids.  So it's possible that these ancient androids are quite literally the building blocks of modern androids.  And in Andromeda, the organics perished... (via supernova or rising radiation levels, not deliberately killed haha what?!  Who said anything about killing organics???  I would never...)

65 light years (3.821e+14 miles) away from us, the electromagnetic waves representing the TV show "Dennis the Menace" are still making their way into space. Fortunately, they are much attenuated (inverse square law).

Rick and Morty season 8 finale!  Pretty solid, good character work.

Overall, I'd rate this season as one of the better ones.  Out of 10 episodes: 3 absolute bangers, 3 great ones, 2 okay ones, 1 bad one, and 1 stinker.  Not a bad run!  Best we've had in years.  Maybe the best season we've had since season 3.

Blackleaf

Really solid episode. Kinger continues to be the best character.
"Oh, wearisome condition of humanity,
Born under one law, to another bound;
Vainly begot, and yet forbidden vanity,
Created sick, commanded to be sound."
