American illegally held by ICE for 25 days despite proof of citizenship

The legal team said they submitted her US birth certificate along with additional documents they say establish her citizenship – but those materials were still insufficient to secure her release from ICE custody.

Four days after her arrest, a Maryland federal district court judge issued an order preventing the government from deporting her while the court reviewed a petition filed by her attorneys challenging her detention.

She could still be deported even now.  And the spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security claims - tellingly, without evidence - that she's an illegal immigrant.

This is looking eerily similar to other instances of regime incompetence and instead of admitting mistakes and relenting, they double down.

The cruelty is the goal, not an accident.

Back during the Black Lives Matter protests, there was a group on a corner in the main part of a town I live near singing songs as I passed. I parked and watched for a while. There was one guy walking around inside the group shoving a confederate flag in everyone's faces, mostly the women for some reason. Protestors ignored him. I assumed he was hoping someone would take a swing at him and start a fight so his buddies in the crowd could film it, but no one took the bait. This kind of baiting by right wing agitators is not a myth. It actually happened right in front of me, and in a very small town so I assume it's commonplace and widespread.

Now I hear the death toll in Iran > 10K. I sure hope Iranians get the secular democracy they want because well, we are losing ours. I wouldn't be surprised if Trump and company just take advantage and hit more nuclear sites after telling them help is coming. Or maybe he will just attack the oil infrastructure, actually making it worse for Iranians. Hard to tell what our freaky administration will do.

I really hope that's an overestimation, because that's an insanely large number in such a short time.  I also get very disturbed by an embattled authoritarian government's willingness to kill its own citizens (I'm so glad that we don't have even the slightest hint of that myopia here in the USA).

Best case scenario for the government:  lots of dead people who no longer pay taxes, provide services, enrich and improve society (people are a resource!).  Then there's public resentment and a complete collapse of any sort of mandate from the masses - a much weaker position for the government.

Worst case scenario: the government collapses anyway, the regime dies in infamy, and there's public hostility towards any sort of return to that sort of system (well, for about 80 years, as has been my experience)

Deciding to brutalize protestors creates a lose-lose scenario.

Okay???  I've been told that covid was a hoax and injecting bleach is a good idea.  Being told something and something being true are NOT the same thing.

The information was coming from "very important sources on the other side," Trump said while announcing the update during an event in the Oval Office on Wednesday.

So, top regime officials.  The same people doing the killings?  Sounds legit.

Ask the protestors and if they say the same thing, then that'd be plausible.  But it's just one side saying stuff and we saw how thet worked out when Trump got tricked by Putin just saying stuff about some sort of attack on one of his mansions and then Trump took it at face value at first.  He changed his mind later, but being gullible isn't exactly a great quality to have as a leader.

"We've been told on good authority, and I hope it's true. Who knows, right?" he added.

You know who should know what's going on in the world?  The President!  There are intelligence services for a reason, not to mention hordes of people whose job is to brief him.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here.  Who knows if this guy is up to speed on anything going on in the world, so having some sort of sensible reaction is a long shot every time.
