Title: The final push DEMS GET OUT AND VOTE!
Post by: Brian37 on November 02, 2016, 08:56:22 AM
Decades of GOP gerrymandering and Reagan's failed trickle up deregulation and union busting has lead to their most vile candidate in our Nation's history. Trump is not just your standard mudslinger, but has piled on the day's of Jim Crow, McCarthyism and the demagoguery scapegoating, hyper nationalism of WW2 Germany.

He started his campaign insulting Hispanics and Latinos, called prisoners of war losers, praised the brutality of Saddam suggesting we lower ourselves to that standard. Has implied physical harm and arrest of political rivals. Has been condemned by REPUBLICAN Colin Powell on top of 50 REPUBLICAN former law agents as being dangerous to global and national stability.

And then there is the joking about sexual assault and misogyny on multiple occasions.

Trump is not a right or left issue. Trump is setting a very dangerous tone in politics that neither party should want to employ. He is undermining the concept of the western idea of peaceful transfer of power and doing so pandering to bigotry, xenophobia, homophobia, and sexism.

All of this is really just the unmasking of tactics to protect corporate welfare, which was coded prior to Trump. To all those who know and accept the danger he is to western political pluralism and open societies, he MUST be defeated by the largest margin possible to send the message that scapegoating demagoguery has no place in a free civil west's politics.

Already did.  They didn't check my driver's license this time (the ID law got stuck down since the primaries) but I had to toss out an all-Republican voters' guide someone had "accidentally" left at my voting booth.

I think most states allow some form of early voting.  CA is where I live and I signed up for an absentee ballot years ago.  I usually get the ballot 3 weeks prior to the election and I can take my time figuring out how I want to vote--and no lines!  In some states one can go to the polls early.  And I'm sure each state is a bit different in what they allow.  But early voting is being done more and more.

The US elections are like The Simpsons.  It starts out okay, but it goes on forever and ever until you pray for a merciful end.

I can vote early, tomorrow, Friday or Saturday.  I will do it tomorrow to get it over with.  Finished my research and final choices tonight.  The crush of lining up with thousands on Nov 8 ... or a few dozen tomorrow morning ... easy choice.  Some hate write-in or early ballots ... because I might change my vote at the last minute, due to last minute events (or mind fucking by the media) and regret how I voted ... bwahah

As I recall, the Simpsons started out brilliant, and then one day, I just realized I hadn't watched the show for two years.  I heard the show had deteriorated, but even though I had "mysteriously" lost interest, I refused to believe it had deteriorated.  How could that even happen?  I even refused to watch any later episodes for fear that it might confirm the unthinkable.

I must be the only person who actually looks at the candidates instead of just a knee-jerk "vote Democrat" reaction.

Anyway, I'm still working through my ballot, but so far I've got a pretty even mix from the two big parties and a couple 3rd-party/independent candidates. The latter is mostly for local elections: much easier to kick out the Big 2 the lower you go.
Title: Re: The final push DEMS GET OUT AND VOTE!

I look at the candidates (but I find that the Republican is almost always a really horrible person), and even once voted for a Republican mayor (who was running against a homophobic religious-right Democrat). But in this presidential election there's no comparison here. It's pretty good vs. unspeakably evil.

It's like being given a choice between a slightly overdone and inadequately seasoned chicken sandwich versus a festering, worm-infested shit sandwich. And any third choice that looks more attractive is just that same shit sandwich in disguise. And if you refuse to choose, you get the shit sandwich by default.

My primary concern is makeup of the Supreme Court. A Trump win will validate the Republicans' delaying tactic and ensure that Scalia's seat will be filled with another Scalia. Then if Ginsburg dies (she is over 80), we'll have a 6-3 conservative Supreme Court. Imagine the horrors that would result in. Packed with right-wing ideologues, they would rubber stamp all the outrages of a looney Republican Congress, tear down the wall of separation between church and state, and also commit what would be the ultimate nightmare in my opinion: the overturn of Roe v. Wade. America might as well be hit by a comet, because the country I love would be dead.

Oh, and if Trump wins, anti-Americanism would surge around the world, and for people like me who live overseas, that would have a devastating effect on our ability to travel. Look for great increases in the incidence of terrorism against Americans. Not to mention surges of racial and ethnic violence in the US itself.

The stakes in this election are yuuuuge. It's basically the life or death of the country. If Hillary wins, I will be ecstatic; it Trump wins, I will mourn the death of my beloved country.

Prefer to vote on the standard election day.  My voting place has no lines and I like to collect the I Voted sticker.  I will be voting for Clinton anyway, so there is no concern I would change my mind.

I live in a place that doesn't have enough residents to form a line longer than 4 people, so going to my voting booth is far less hassle than voting absentee.  I'm not big on the "I voted" sticker.  I put if on so as not to offend anyone at the poll table, but I take it off when I get to my car.  Walking around with an "I voted" sticker all day is about as valuable as notifying strangers that I took a breath of air.

I am starting to collect the "I Voted" stickers on my refrigerator.  A bit late, but why not?  I mean *I* know I have voted in every Presidential and midterm election (but not 1980 when I supported Anderson but the 3 hour long line back then made me stay home rather than make a meaningless vote).  But some stickers on the fridge look good.

I've never lived in an area where I had to wait to vote. My voting districts were always easy. Just walk in, sign your name and vote.

I remember John Anderson! I even met him on the plane. It was campaign season, and he was flying from Minneapolis to San Francisco. He was up in first class, but being the politician he was, he came back to greet the unwashed masses in coach. I still have the boarding card sleeve that he signed for me. (I was just a kid at the time, so I couldn't vote.)

I can't fucking wait for the election results to finally be announced. This is the most stressful election ever for me. The stakes are higher than they've ever been, and the number trends on 538 have me reeling with anxiety. (I prefer the numbers on the New York Times aggregator.)

I can't wait for this whole mess to be over too.  Every few weeks, Trump does something so blitheringly disqualifying and  think the contest is other, but his supporters just shrug it off like water from a duck's back.

I'm constructing a post on my personal blog basically saying that I have enough prepared food and wine to stay fed and drunk without the TV on until election day and I might just take advantage of that.

I've announced here before you came that I had gotten rid of my TV maybe 5 years ago now.  I thought I was the only one, except I started reading that "cable cutting" was becoming a major alternative lifestyle as compared to beating yourself over the head and cluttering your mind with chaos.  A major part of it was the news, which gets especially annoying during election years.  It's 90% press releases from spin doctors creating shit that networks might want to buy for the sensational value.  Everything seems so important when Wolf Blitzer is talking about it, except that it's not important at all.  It's a redundant waste of time.  Rewashed, repeated, washed again, done in a way that I felt I was a malicious attempt to force my will and my attention to someone else's needs.  And the political propaganda was only briefly interrupted for Excedrin and Bayer, which was annoying enough on it's own.

The internet is bad enough, but I can just read the headlines and a few sentences to get an idea whether it's leading to anything important without having Wolf Bitzer ringing in my ears between commercial breaks.  And the good thing about getting rid of TV is the slow realization that life can be not just endurable, but much more fulfilling without it.  And as a small perk, it's not costing me $100 a month for something I basically hate to begin with.

I use the TV mainly to watch the Science , History, and National Geographic Channels, but in election years for MSNBC and CNN.  I AM a Political Science BS major after all.

But this year has just too absurd!  I just want the madness to end.  5 days to go and I don't really want to hear about the day-today polls.  I just want the votes to happen and wake up Wednesday morning and know.

I'll vote of course.

But the race to the bottom has even me depressed and I used to LOVE this stuff.

Not to say TV doesn't have things in which I'm interested.  For me this currently is all about entertainment.  Educational stuff is available on the Internet, but there isn't enough good entertainment on TV to pay $100 a month for.  That's over a thousand dollars a year.  Think of the DVD series of on the order of Breaking Bad, Dexter, Downtown Abbey, Game of thrones that buys, and I can binge on them again and again until something better comes along.  Really, most of the entertainment on TV barely passes as something to pass the time.

When it comes to all the referenda (California has a lot), local board and council members, etc. I usually check a few websites (local Democratic club, League of Women Voters, Equality California), consult people I trust for their knowledge of local politics, and of course I read the synopses of the measures themselves.

For politicians running under parties, I vote Democratic, or if it's a Republican vs. a 3rd party only, I'll vote the 3rd party, or if it's a Republican runnin unopposed, I'll abstain. I don't vote for Republicans (indeed, I vote against them), unless there's a damn good reason to vote for one. Yes, I do look at the candidates, and almost invariably the Republican is a scumbag. And if it's a scumbag vs. a scumbag, I'll pick the Democrat, because we still need majorities. The only time I ever voted for a Republican was for a mayor, and there was a damn good reason for that (her Dem opponent was a homophobic, abortion-hating minister).

Pretty much the same here.  I would vote for a decent Repub candidate like the liberal ones back in the 70s, but I sure haven't seen one in decades.

And there is all that concern that even a decent one would vote party line most of the time...

I remember liking Anderson, but because of various reasons for the life of me I don't remember why..  I haven't taken the time to lookup anything about him since the time he was running.  I remember hoping John Glenn would win, but he washed out early and went deeply into debt. That was back when politicians actually stood a chance without superpacs and so on. I kind of miss the days when Ohio had two great senators, Howard Metzembaum and John Glenn..

I voted for one republican mayor and the only reason was back then Dayton Ohio was run by crooked funeral directors.
What's it say about your hometown when the only people getting elected are funeral directors? Dayton pretty much died and was buried as a viable city of any opportunity. The only reputable pols from the Dayton of my youth went on to either statewide office or federal seats. The last one who actually gave a shit about the people of Dayton as far as I can tell was a representative by the name of Tony Hall. The only knock i ever had against Hall was he became a bible thumper, but he was always very liberal in his political life..
QuoteIn the 1980s, Hall became an evangelical Christian, prompting him to change his position on abortion from pro-choice to pro-life. Otherwise, his voting record was decidedly liberal.

It's awful, isn't it? Everyone is anxiety ridden. I am genuinely terrified that Trump will win and am certainly not alone, and just as many people are just as terrified that Clinton will win.

I think my biggest fear outside of contemporary political issues: This is how our culture will evolve now. An idiocracy where actual facts do not matter, rather social media rhetoric will become king. If enough people say it, it becomes true. So in 2 years, it could be WORSE. That just seems unfathomable.

Right now, I am sort of pining for the more innocent and simpler time when Romney ran against Obama. Romney seemed so terrible and scary to me compared with McCain as the GOP candidate before him. And so on and so on.

Which leaves me to wonder what could be worse than a sudden resurgence of overt white supremacy, misogyny, and blatant, in-your-face racism and xenophobia?

I need a drink.

The numbers on 538 seem to have come to a standstill, hovering around 66-67% for the last 2 days. That's a good sign that the post-Comey precipitous drop has stopped. I hope. Time will tell, of course. I'm hoping for a reversal, and I'm heartened by reports of large early voter turnouts. Plus I heard a report that Clinton's approval ratings have risen in the last few days (probably because she's handling the slings and arrows with such class).

Also, the more intelligent of the conservative Republicans I know (yes, there are a few, believe it or not) are quite confident that Hillary will win. The dumber ones just say "Trump will win! Yeah! Emails! Murrika! Benghazeeee! Trump!"

Turns out, from what I've read, that of all the aggregators, 538 is the most pessimistic (from Hillary supporters' perspective) because Silver uses a more conservative model than he did in 2012, probably because he got burned earlier by predicting Trump wouldn't be the Puber nominee. The Upshot (New York Times) has her at 84%, Daily Kos at 91%, and Sam Wang (also an outlier) at 98 or 99% depending on the two systems he uses.

I'm still worried, of course, but less so at this particular moment.

Here's hoping I'll be able to eat my traditional presidential victory dinner on Wednesday. (Once every four years I go to the same restaurant to celebrate if my presidential candidate wins. I started this tradition in 2008.) Crossing my fingers!!!

Some normally accurate predictors have Clinton "likely to win" from 99% to 66%.  British oddsmakers say 85% likely Clinton.  85% seems about right to me.

85% probability of winning the presidency.

Nate Silver has 65%. The Upshot has 84%. David Nir has 87%. Sam Wang of PEC has 99%. Both Nate Silver and Sam Wang are outliers; I think Sam Wang's is ridiculously optimistic.

I'm not counting my chickens. I'm optimistic, but nervous. New Hampshire is critical. Nevada seems promising. Florid and North Carolina would be great, and Ohio would be the icing on the cake.

I'm hoping for massive turnouts. Judging by the early voting, it looks promising. But you never know, and it ain't over till Brunnhilda sings.

OK, I got confused.  Was I thinking winning by 85% points.  Not sure.  That would be absurd.  But 85% chance of winning could mean just winning by 2% points.

Not really.  And 85% chance of winning, is that given 100 trial elections of the two candidates (what torture that would be), Hillary would win on average, 85/100.  Such statistical masturbation ... doesn't deserve detailed comment.  My candidate has a vanishingly small chance of winning, and I am fine with that.  What you are talking about is odds making in British betting parlors where everything and anything can be bet on.  Hillary might win by an excess of 5% or 10% of the vote ... that is entirely different statistically (that is for one single trial, not multiple trials of the same election).

Yeah, I was thinking there must be some kind of math that could translate 85% points of winning into winning by X% points, but I wasn't sure, and wouldn't of been able to figure it out anyway.

If Clinton wins we know we are further down the road than we thought. If Trump wins maybe we have a glimmer, but regardless, if we, as individuals, and a country, don't bow before Jesus our demise is surely to follow

I voted at 3:30 PM.  Where I live, there were three people ahead of me and two voting machines, which both seemed like they were working, but I don't know that for sure.  Heavily populated areas are probably the worst places to vote.  It shouldn't be like that.  Those pictures in the video were nightmares.  Although, I don't know how fast the lines were moving.  It would depend on the available machines.  Now if the lines were not moving fast, I could see myself walking out, even maybe if I didn't have something important to do elsewhere.  Long lines are one of the few things that still annoy me, which is actually quite understated.  I look around when I visit Chicago, and people seem to deal with them, but I hate them, probably to an unreasonable level.

Don't these Conservative Christians know that God chooses their political leaders?

Romans 13:1-5 - Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

So if God chooses Hillary to rule, who are they to complain? Then again, the only reason this country exists is because its people rebelled against the rule of the king. Remind me, what makes this a Christian nation again?

Evangelical guests on the program  last night stated they were going to lose no matter who won.  I didn't necessarily believe they were really that pessimistic about their condition, but this election seemed to focus more on racism and immigration.  Any assumptions about Trump at this point are mostly speculative when it doesn't involve race.  A Republican Senate is where the religious right might benefit the most, however.
