Alright guys, I'm not sure if the two of you are kidding here, but you ought to be able to look at that and come up with the right answer without a lot of work. If 1/8a + 30 = 1/4a then you know 1/8a is 30 right off the bat. 30 + 30 = 60. 60 X 4 =240. The book was 240 pages long.

But let's do the math. Solve for a

1/8a+30=1/4a
Step 1: Subtract 1/4a from both sides.
1/8a+30−1/4a=1/4a−1/4a
−1/8a+30=0
Step 2: Subtract 30 from both sides.
−1/8a+30−30=0−30
−1/8a=−30
Step 3: Multiply both sides by 8/(-1).
(8/−1)*(−1/8a)=(8/−1)*(−30)
a=240

Because 2/8, or 1/4, remains for the final day.
