Japan first removed the swords from the peasants (swords became common because of the civil wars).  But the advent of the gun destabilized this again.  The guns were banned, by the first Tokugawa shogun around 1600, which was good for the surrounding countries, because Japanese manufacture was better than the original Portuguese/Dutch.  That shogun also suppressed the "waka" or Japanese pirates, via the lockdown of all Japanese to the Islands of Japan.  This was a great relief to China and Korea.  This continued until the arrival of the Americans, who by that time had better cannon and guns than the Japanese.

Yes, laminate armor won't stop bullets.  Guns were part of the armament at the last great Japanese battle, at Sekigahara, in 1600 (170,000 total combatants).
