Actually, those were K't'inga-class cruisers, which are similar to the D7 cruisers from the original series. The Klingon Bird of Prey first appeared in Star Trek III: the Search For Spock where Jim from Taxi was giving them shit. But the Bird of Prey was originally a Romulan ship in the series. The script for ST3 was just revised so much that it changed who uses the Bird of Prey.
