It depends.  Sometimes, it's really just another word for beautiful.  But it could also mean paleness.  As in someone who doesn't have to toil the fields because they're rich enough to be able to stay indoors.  Unsurprisingly, guys were interested in marrying a rich woman.  In more modern times, this has changed - with pale being less attractive compared to a little tan. Once again, this is linked to wealth - those able to cultivate a nice tan are generally better off.
