In the Elder Scrolls video games, Lorkhan "tricked" the original spirits into creating the world.  This took away some of their divine energy and made it a part of the world.  Some accepted this and willingly became part of the world, but most were horrified and fled.

In the present day, some of the elves consider mortality a curse and want to unmake the world to return to a state of immortality.  In contrast, most humans consider mortality to be a good thing, believing that the limitations and trials of life challenge and enrich the soul.

That's Nighthawks, probably the most famous diner painting ever.  It does have a door, just no apparent door to the outside.  Enterprising internet citizens have rectified that apparent error:
