QuoteJACKSON, Miss. (AP) â€" Gov. Phil Bryant has signed into law a bill that allows some members of churches to undergo firearms training so they can provide armed security for their congregations.

The Church Protection Act specifies that those designated can carry guns into church buildings. It also allows people to carry holstered weapons without a permit.

Republican State Representative Andy Gipson of Braxton says the law gives small congregations an option to defend themselves against attack. He proposed the bill as a response to the slayings last year of nine people at a church in Charleston, South Carolina.

The Mississippi Association of Police Chiefs has opposed the portion of the bill that loosens permit requirements. The group says it dismantles Mississippi's licensing system and makes it harder to check someone who has a gun isn't a violent criminal.

Works for me. Guarantee there ain't going to be any edgy sermons. Kind of hard to be challenging to a dude with a shotgun in his lap.

This is the part I have a problem with. I rather it be regulated so you can know that a person has the mental capacity and training to use a gun.

Same here.

It's a good idea to carry a gun when you go to church.  You never know when some fucker might piss you off.  Or you might just have a sudden urge to shoot the place up.

Just one more reason for me to not want to go to church in Mississippi. My gf's brother is a pastor in Mississippi and has a pretty developed case of dementia to go along with it.. He's a pretty decent guy though and his family treats the old man like an ATM.. Kind of sad . After Katrina he personally raised about $50,000 for people who lost their homes by driving around in his truck picking up scrap metal to sell..Did I mention that he has an old Italian machine gun from WWII sitting around the place?..Might be interesting to see him take it to church..
All hail my new signature!

Admit it. You're secretly green with envy.

A Christian with a gun is showing a complete lack of faith, if you ask me.

The scenario is not complete without some vipers to test their faith. Guns, vipers, the whole shootin' match in one place.

Viper bites parishioner. Parishioner shoots at viper, misses, ricochet kills pastor. God's will, imo.

Some guy with a permit for automatic weapons could take out a whole congregation. Why am I not saddened by this?

No need to be sad. They'll just get to heaven a bit sooner than they expected.

Why do you need a permit?  Seems kind of silly.  You can already carry concealed in Mississippi without one, if you're a resident.  They must have a clause for carrying in churches.

It should really be up to the church.

The south is riddled with dipshit religious laws.  I just read an article today about a woman who has had 12 daycares she owned shut down over 14 years, but because of a religious exemption in Alabama she just opens another the next day a town or two over.  In fact, one web site checking into this law found at least 80 daycares which were about to be shut down by regulators which suddenly became religiously affiliated, allowing them to stay open with virtual impunity.

Personally, I don't care how many southerners are shot in churches.  I call it "survival of the not dumb".  If the south wants to pass laws that it's legal to open your beer with a bullet, in the long run that only means less stupid southerners.  A kind of "win-win", as far as I can see.  TO BE CLEAR, I said it means less "stupid" southerners, NOT that all southerners are stupid.  It's a general trend, not an absolute truth.
This sentence is a lie...
