QuoteABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Pope Francis said on Monday government officials have a "human right" to refuse to discharge a duty, such as issuing marriage licenses to homosexuals, if they feel it violates their conscience.

Speaking to reporters as he returned home from a 10-day trip to the United States and Cuba, Francis also repeated his condemnation of priests who had sexually abused children, saying the victims had been "crushed by evil."

Although the Argentine-born pontiff delved into some of the United States' thorniest political debates during his visit, he never specifically referred to a controversy over same-sex marriages, which the Church firmly opposes.

On the flight back to Rome, he was asked if he supported individuals, including government officials, who refuse to abide by some laws, such as issuing marriage licenses to gays.

"Conscientious objection must enter into every juridical structure because it is a right," Francis said.

Earlier this month a city official in the U.S. state of Kentucky, Kim Davis, went to jail because she refused to issue a marriage license to a gay couple following a Supreme Court decision to make homosexual marriage legal.

Davis's case has taken on national significance in the 2016 presidential campaign, with one Republican contender, Mike Huckabee, holding rallies in favor of Davis, a Apostolic Christian, who has since joined the Republican party.

"I can't have in mind all cases that can exist about conscientious objection but, yes, I can say that conscientious objection is a right that is a part of every human right," he said, speaking in Italian.

"And if someone does not allow others to be a conscientious objector, he denies a right," he added.

Same thing as with the Replitards and conservative supporters. Davis doesn't have to do anything but shut up to do her job. I was a DOD employee in different capacities over 28 years. At any point I had a "moral objection" to fixing a Saudi F-4 as an aircraft welder I would be fired. But then I'm not an elected official. Davis is not aiding and abetting gays in any way, all she does apparently is sign a document, and that at the insistence of a constitutional decision.

This demonstrates the myopic mindset of religion. The same rule applies to not issuing drivers licenses to women if you are a Muslim, not allowing businesses to remain open on Sunday or a host of other particular situations where religion is allowed to trump the law or common sense.

No, you're wrong. The pope is infallible, dumb atheist......:lol_hitting:

I suppose someone will have to remind her she's not Catholic too, since she didn't realize she wasn't really a Democrat or a hypocrite either.
How can you be sure my refusal to agree with your claim a symptom of my ignorance and not yours?

In exactly 150 years from now, Kim Davis will be declared a martyr-saint. Saint-Kim of Davis... get used to it.

In 150 years will there be any Christians to declare anyone a saint? Won't they all have been raptured?

No they, along with all of us, will be dead... unless some of us can transfer our consciousness to ever lasting robots...

No a conscientious objector refuses to do a certain task , they do not however actively prevent others from the doing the same.

Evolution is probably the slowest biological process on planet earth, the only one that comes close is the understanding of it by creationists.

In spite of mediocre support of the like button, right now I wish I could press it more than once.  Kim Davis is one part conscientious objector, two parts media whore, and three parts control freak of massive proportion.  The Pope refers to all those things as conscientious objection, but her actions go way beyond conscientious objection.

Yeah, but she's a control freak for Jesus, so that makes it okay.  If it were a Muslim clerk refusing to give a marriage license to a Jewish/Muslim couple, that'd be horrible.

There would be tons of Islamic apologists defending that move.

Fine, a Shinto clerk refusing to give a building permit to a company because the company is going to bulldoze a grove of trees the clerk believes are inhabited by the kami.

Or a Scientologist refusing to give a driver's license to a film critic that gave a bad review to Tom Cruise.

You'd probably get a lot of environmentalists supporting it.
