I am absolutely certain that I do not know, but it might be possible to find out. - Christopher Hitchens

The barbarians liberated Europe from the tyranny of Rome, something Jews fervently wanted for themselves.

I am just as proud of my barbarian ancestors ... as my more civilized ancestors.  Rome wasn't a golden age, except for the treasury of the Emperor.

Pagan folk would have been just as interested in stopping your freethought and atheism as a threat to the received order ... as the Roman Christians were.

Civilization was a really good series, although I found more awe in Bronowski's The Ascent of Man, which was produced by the same team that later hooked up with Carl Sagan and did this little show called Cosmos...

Yes ... Bronowski was the boss!  Too bad Google took down the rest of the Ascent series from YouTube.  I think it should be required watching.  Have you watched any of the interview material on YouTube that they have?  Also his daughter's encomium?

The tyranny of order? Sounds terrible...

Order?  Depends on who is doing the ordering.  Or are you channeling your inner dictator?  A little order is a good thing, otherwise it is fanaticism.

Not the interviews, but I have seen his daughter's follow-up.  And the end of the 11th episode, Knowledge or Certainty, is certainly some of the most powerful television ever filmed:

Quote from: Dr. Jacob Bronowski
This is the concentration camp and crematorium at Auschwitz.  This is where people were turned into numbers.  Into this pond were flushed the ashes of some four million people.  And that was not done by gas.  It was done by arrogance.  It was done by dogma.  It was done by ignorance.  When people believe that they have absolute knowledge, with no test in reality, this is how they behave.

This quote is of course applicable to more nations, and more governments, and more peoples than just the Germans of the 1930s and 1940s.

Solitary

There is nothing more frightful than ignorance in action.

I do love this, but please make a proper introduction. I'm especially interested in your background now :eyes:

Awe-inspiring is something no religion or faith has a patent on. Indeed their sense of awe is so insipid compared to the awe discovered by science.
