"Let's say that they actually made that movie."

"Okay, they actually made that movie."

I just saw Ruthless People, with Danny DeVito and Bette Midler. Funny as hell, and twice as hilarious! 🤣

The directors are noteworthy.

I have a list of movies that I consider to be my top 10 movies that I've seen. I couldn't rank them in any order from favorite to least favorite, so I listed them in chronological order:

The Grapes of Wrath - 1940
King Rat - 1965
Aguirre: The Wrath of God - 1972
The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser - 1979
Quest for Fire - 1981
The Day After  - 1983
Glory  - 1989
The Medicine Man  - 1992
God on Trial  - 2008
Hidden Figures - 2016

I also have movies that are less serious, but I'll save those for another post.

You would have liked Randy Robert's Cinema class at Purdue. Grad level. I was one of his T/As when I was in grad school. Found out he was three days older than me. Repercussions.

You might be one of the few people on the planet Earth that liked Medicine Man.

Really? What about it was not enjoyable?

Early-ish bell ringer for Matta Grasso deforestation.

I recall it was a massive bomb when it came out. The reviews were particularly mean to the female lead IIRC but overall.

Here we are: Roger Ebert *1/2 out of ****

QuoteVariety called it "An indelicate attempt to create some African Queen-style magic while curing cancer and saving the rainforests in the bargain, this jumbo-budget two-character piece suffers from a very weak script and a lethal job of miscasting."[15]

This seems to be happening a lot lately. Movies that came out, did nothing, and were forgotten are being re-evaluated. Makes me wonder if the current media landscape is worse than I think it is.

Wicked Part 2.

I gushed about the first part, but I have to remind myself that the part one didn't really pick up steam until about halfway through.  But it sure as hell ended on a high note (literally and figuratively)

This movie picks up right where we left off, and man, does it hit the ground running.  Some action, traveling, talking, traveling, talking, traveling...and take a wild guess what happens next!  The characters and plot are already established, so it's pretty predictable what happens next.  If you've seen Hunger Games or Star Wars or Harry Potter, you can kinda already see where this is going.

What I will say is that I kinda hate it when the villain is very weak in a story.  Hypothetical: your protagonist points a gun at the villain.  If they piss their pants, you have a bad villain, imho.  And especially when they're a powerful political figure like a head of state and they know you're coming, they're either going to have powerful guards or a trap.  If they don't, they're a bad villain.

Imho, the best villains are like a force of nature that will definitely triumph unless the protagonist(s) pull out all the stops to...*double beat*...stop them.  And even then, it's 50/50 that they succeed.  But that's a fairly modern, Blockbuster convention, and the land of OZ was conceived over 100 years ago, so I'll cut it some slack.  I actually really did like the fantastical setting with the talking animals and magic and witches and non-OSHA-approved roadway, and would absolutely love to see OZ as a setting for a tabletop RPG, but the setting has so much more potential than actual moving parts - it's like a lazy slacker's Middle Earth (I'm gonna get hatemail for that one)

Without going into spoilers, I'll say that I liked the music but was irked by the sheer number of plot contrivances but prequels tend to do that.

And finally, the events of Wicked makes the 1939 film absolutely hysterical in hindsight.  Dorothy may be the dumbest American of her age, and she had some stiff competition but she benefits significantly from her background as a native-born Oklahoman.  I'm half-joking, of course.  But stealing the shoes from someone who just died among other questionable decisions...I'm just saying, the tinman wasn't the only one lacking a heart nor the scarecrow the only one lacking wits.

I've seen very few critics that were smarter than me, so I don't pay attention to them. I read reviews, I know which reviewers to avoid because their egos do the talking.
