Tried reading posts in a couple of Christian forums this afternoon. What a mistake, I don't see how anyone can stomach the reasoning (misguided as it is) behind Christian belief. I'm not generally critical of others beliefs but religion in general just turns me off.

I have christians in my own family. It makes me sick too. But I keep my mouth shut to keep the peace.

The only religious person in my family is my daughter who, fortunately for  me, lives on the west coast, fortunately for me because she, influenced by her mother, tends toward the fundamental outlook. As for my wife, I don't know, religion doesn't seem to come up or she knows I am a little different and doesn't mention it. In any case we don't discuss it.

We have friends about a mile from us that we get together with generally at Thanks Giving. We know they are, or were, Catholic. I believe they may have modified their commitment to the Church; they used to say grace at meal times but for the last three or four years no longer do so. The reasons are a bit convoluted not to be gone into here.

You can never underestimate the power of fear. It defies logic… it makes highly intelligent people irrational. It is not religion that does this, it is fear.

Aitm is correct.. Fuck! I hate admitting that,  but it's all about fear and wondering if they're going to burn in hell forever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and......

I think it is about people wanting control over their fate from fear of the unknown. People want to be gods themselves and be all powerful, and know they aren't so create a God that they can control by praying and kissing His ass.  :fU:

I know for myself it was the fear of hell that kept me at bay. Finally I got over that fear. I still feel a little superstitious at times but I try to shake that indoctrination feeling.

I wasn't brought up in a religious household, but I did have certain superstitious inklings brought out due to people in my family feeling that way, the old broken mirror, walking under ladders, opening umbrellas indoors thing. I learned that these were just things made up to try and gets kids to behave and follow rules.

The most disturbing thing about such forums is the view into how these people actually think.  Well perhaps 'think' is not the best term, but insight into the utter nonsense that is rattling around in their minds, combined with the fact that they vote, raise children, and are actually walking the streets.
