IS 'bulldozed' ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud, Iraq says

QuoteBaghdad (AFP) - The Islamic State group have begun bulldozing the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud in Iraq, the government said, in the jihadists' latest attack on the country's historical heritage.

IS "assaulted the historic city of Nimrud and bulldozed it with heavy vehicles," the tourism and antiquities ministry said on an official Facebook page.

An Iraqi antiquities official confirmed the news, saying the destruction began after noon prayers on Thursday and that trucks that may have been used to haul away artefacts had also been spotted at the site.

"Until now, we do not know to what extent it was destroyed," the official said on condition of anonymity.

Nimrud, one of the jewels of the Assyrian era, was founded in the 13th century BC and lies on the Tigris River around 30 kilometres (18 miles) southeast of Mosul, Iraq's second city and the IS group's main hub in the country.

"I'm sorry to say everybody was expecting this. Their plan is to destroy Iraqi heritage, one site at a time," said Abdulamir Hamdani, an Iraqi archaeologist from Stony Brook University.

"Hatra of course will be next," he said, referring to a beautifully-preserved city in Nineveh province that is more than 2,000 years old and is a UNESCO world heritage site.

Nevermind. I am reassured by the fact that there are over a billion peaceful Muslims.
Why worry?

What a loss to human heritage. Apparently they're not happy with simply demolishing libraries and artifacts, now they have to wipe entire cities off the map.

New ISIS Video Shows Militants Smashing Ancient Iraq Artifacts

QuoteBAGHDAD (AP) â€" The Islamic State group released a video on Thursday showing militants using sledgehammers to smash ancient artifacts in Iraq's northern city of Mosul, describing the relics as idols that must be removed.

The destructions are part of a campaign by the IS extremists who have destroyed a number of shrines â€" including Muslim holy sites â€" in order to eliminate what they view as heresy. They are also believed to have sold ancient artifacts on the black market in order to finance their bloody campaign across the region.

The five-minute video shows a group of bearded men inside the Mosul Museum using hammers and drills to destroy several large statues, which are then shown chipped and in pieces. The video then shows a black-clad man at a nearby archaeological site inside Mosul, drilling through and destroying a winged-bull Assyrian protective deity that dates back to the 7th century B.C.

IS extremists? Militants?  Hell no. True believers, disciples of Muhammad. Following Islam to the letter.

The holy Quran tells us: " Kill, loot, rape, enslave, destroy" until nothing left but a pile of rubble and mutilated corpses.
Wonderful.

Maybe there is something seriously wrong with this noble belief system after all.

Can we bomb them now?

What the hell? Certainly not.

We must not be judgmental. Remember, all religions, all cultures are the same.
Let them have fun.

They're destroying their own heritage, seems funny given there approach has the same barbaric reasoning as I imagine it would have been from when those artefacts were made.

Bomb them? How about troops on the ground and wipe them out.

The best hardware is useless if the will to win is not there.

“We can not win this war by killing them,” Marie Harf said on MSNBC.

QuoteReversing thousands of years of battlefield experience in which wars were won by “killing them”, the State Department spokeswoman argued that you can’t defeat ISIS by killing its fighters.

"We can not kill our way out of this war,” she said. “We need in the medium and longer term to go after the root causes that lead people to join these groups, whether it is lack of opportunity for jobs."

The root causes is Islam, stupid woman! But you are not allowed to say that.

"The Sphinx and Pyramids Must be Destroyed"

QuoteEgypt's Muslim fundamentalists are now calling for the destruction of the Pyramids and the Great Sphinx of Giza under the pretext that Islam prohibits idols.

If the extremists have no respect for human life, why should they care about a pyramid or a statue?

Murjan Salem al-Johari, one of Egyptian leaders of the Saudi-inspired Wahhabis, otherwise referred to as the "Salafis," said that it was the duty of all Muslims to destroy the Pyramids and the Great Sphinx just as the Taliban destroyed two ancient statues of the Buddha in Afghanistan in 2001.

"All statues in Egypt must be destroyed," al-Johrai declared in a TV interview. "Muslims must implement the rules of Sharia and we will destroy the statues of Sphinx and the Pyramids because they are idols."[/url]

My heritiage too... my mom's entire side of the family is Assyrian.

It really sucks that these pricks are doing this and wiping out a culture from history. I really don't know what to say... I'm really upset about this.

It's not their heritage, at least not in their eyes. Their heritage goes back to Saudi Arabia.
