I found this video explaining what I came around to think of this "ice bucket challenge for ALS"

At first, when I first heard of this, I thought "wow, what a stupid thing to do... dump a bucket of ice water over your head so you don't have to donate to ALS research"

But after a few moments of thinking actually thinking about it I realized.... This is REALLY spreading the word. Although the people that are dumping ice water on their head aren't contributing money to research, (I bet some of them are though), what they are doing is taking advantage of social media in one of the most positive ways I have ever seen. Spreading the word. And I know that this caused more people to donate and contribute to ALS research.

Good shit.

you are right as opposed to my original thought that this was a fucking joke that famous people were shaming each other into sans the "cash" that they really need.  I hope this is a positive and hopefully a new yearly thingy that makes more money for medical science to do not much in the way of an actual remedy. But hey, lots of good vids of famous people getting wet and going " hoo-hah dat cold"..

LaS.. i am afraid this is just a gimmick and not much else.

This kind of thing has happened a lot of times with methods of advertising for a good cause. The problem with advertising for a cause is if they don't offer something to other, it gets ignored quickly, like if all your doing is handing out wrist bands or a public marathon, its not going to get attention enough that it does much good.

However, shock tactics that don't cross a border of shock/horror as, like those car adverts of people dying from car crashes, it can work if the event plays to peoples callous sense of humor, or schadenfreude, seeing peoples discomfort and laughing at it at their expense. It plays more to people then a generically boring advert.

Clinton Kelly wrote that he was unable to do the challenge because he was travelling so he would donate plus he would donate $50 for any of his fans who did the challenge in honor of his Aunt Elaine who died from ALS.  This quote was on his page today.

QuoteI am beyond grateful for your overwhelming response to my twist on the ALS challenge. Today I am donating $5,000 because of you, with the hope that a cure for this wretched disease can be found quickly. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You've made Aunt Elaine proud. (And as a side note: To those of you who said I "copped out" or was "chicken," you can go suck it. Because you suck.) Have a fabulous Monday, everyone!

Just two weeks ago a guy I know was diagnosed with ALS. I don't know him all that well but he is in really good shape, eats well, exercises etc... Really puts your own mortality into perspective.

As to this ice bucket campaign, it's a great idea even if it doesn't last that long. it's going to raise both money and awareness. You have to come up with something new every now and then to draw attention. Good idea by whoever dreamed it up. I'm sure a lot of the other charities are wishing they had thought of it first.

It's just celebrities ghoulishly using a terrible disease to further their own publicity.

They are even too tight to donate the $100.

Charlie Sheen filled his bucket with money & donated it all...

PickelledEggs

I know a lot of people that are doing both... and many people that are opting to donate.

PickelledEggs

lol I just got nominated to do the ice bucket challenge. I'm going to do both the challenge and donate some money to the cause.

PickelledEggs

There ya go. Donated.

I also recorded me dumping a garbage can of ice water on my face. It was so heavy I could barely lift it... lol

You can donate also. I just did both because I wanted to dump ice water on my head
