Quote from: "Shiranu"I'm sorry Thum, I like you but I just don't see how you can compare Southern Conservative Whites who vote for politicians who want to strip women of the right to their body, deport immigrants simply because "ZOMG DEY GUN TAKE UR JOBZ!" and install theocracy to black music being played on the radio.

That said, I think some people are taking this thread WAY to seriously. He straight up said this is a joke.

Edit: Also, I cant stand the concept of white/black/asian/w.e... it literally tells you shit all about a person's culture and is a complete joke that was used to justifying keeping group B beneath Group A.

At the risk of taking it too seriously, I think that it's pretty comparable in the context of "culture", as you pointed out.  Music is very much a powerful expression of culture, and is often inescapable, as anyone with inconsiderate neighbors knows.  Perhaps one has more serious effects, perhaps not.  I don't see the glorification of violence as culturally benign at all, and we all have to live with other people who absorb those values, and then promulgate them in their own communities (which is why you now find "Crips" and "Bloods" nationwide, although they were Los Angeles-only gangs until the late 80s).

Don't undersell the power of culture.  It far outweighs the power of any politician, or even any group of politicians.

At least with politicians, you get a vote.

Thread joking about bigotry going awry? I can't imagine how that could happen.

Wait this thread as turned to joke? When I recently drove through a couple of the states that are listed I thought they already were implementing it.

And yet you just made a big deal about not being white.  I think you're being idealistic and naive if you don't think race (for better lack of a word) plays a big part.  Ancestry has always been a huge factor regarding cultural identity.  When speaking of different ethnic groups anything that can be categorized about a group of people plays a part.  Ancestry, language, dress, social customs, religion, nationalism, you name it.  The most obvious differences are the visual ones like the color of your skin, facial features, physical size, hair texture, the way you dress, and the way you act.

These difference definitely matter, because of human behavior.  We make them matter.  We are most comfortable with things that are most like us and what we're used to being around.

I read a story about the dalai lama where someone asked how he got along so well with everybody, even in different cultures.  He replied that it was because he looked for what people had in common, rather than what was different.  An excellent way to look at the world, but not very common.

It would be nice if it didn't matter, but that's not the way it is.
