Title: Extraterrestrial life questions and chat thread
Post by: Sting Chameleon on May 10, 2016, 12:59:34 PM
I put this thread here because at least one of my questions involves religion in this thread.

#1: If alien life is advanced enough can they make a universe where no life in it ever dies?

#2: If aliens are real could they have written The Holy Bible?

#3: If alien life is advanced enough can they revive the dead?

#4: If alien life is real can they safely make someone live much longer?

You are asking for pure speculation.  There are no answers to the questions you are asking which aren't just pulled straight out of someone's ass.

No, the universe is the universe and it's where everything else exists.

Quote from: Sting Chameleon on May 10, 2016, 12:59:34 PM#2: If aliens are real could they have written The Holy Bible?
This relies on both the notion that 1.) Aliens are real 2.) Aliens are intelligent 3.) Aliens can communicate with us by means we understand and 4.) They're giant fucking punks

Quote from: Sting Chameleon on May 10, 2016, 12:59:34 PM#3: If alien life is advanced enough can they revive the dead?
Depends on how you define it. We can revive the dead. Ever watched someone flatline in an ER?

Quote from: Sting Chameleon on May 10, 2016, 12:59:34 PM#4: If alien life is real can they safely make someone live much longer?
Again, depends on how you look at it. We've done that too. Humans used to be old by 45.

No, to all four questions, sorry.  Wisdom tells us to to mess with that shit.  We are hardly competent (us or aliens) to get a matching pair of socks on our feet.  My current pair don't actually match ;-)

That's why all of my socks are the same brand and style.  I'm hip to the collusion between sock manufacturers and washing machine manufacturers to steal socks and syphon them off to Chinese sock sweat shops..

You are wrong APA--it is gremlins who take them--I have  proof--it's a FACT!  There I proved it.

I clicked on this hoping for better questions.  Speculation about intelligent alien life not being carbon-based, living on a planet orbiting a white dwarf, have different social organization (like eusociality), have a different conceptual framework, have a different values, the perennial hostile/friendly/indifferent debate, why haven't we made contact yet, etc.  Those are interesting questions to me.  The bible and religious questions, not so much.

Funny thing about socks. I learned in the Navy if you wash your socks aboard ship you always get them all back.
Also, a friend of mine runs a cleaner/dry cleaner and has never lost a sock. Turns out they only teleport a short distance and you can find them if you look.

as far as answering the questions, go to your local Walmart and wait. Ask the first brown person you see. Chances are one of his relatives is an alien. Name of Juan or Ahmed. Get the straight dope from the source.

Carry on.

I've often thought of the question of alien life and what it would be like.  I do think we will find life within this solar system.  Places like Europa that has, apparently, a large amount of water could easily support life.  Our planet supports life in just about every niche there is.  When I was in grade school, I was taught that all life was based upon the energy of the sun.  That's not so any more.

The universe is so huge I think it has to have life.  But the distances are so huge that it may be that we never see it.  At least within a few thousand more years.  But maybe not.  If it were intelligent enough to be able to have the technology to come here, I would think it would have enough technology to have studied us in great detail.  They may not want to make contact.  Why would they want to?  What would they look like?  What would their values be?  I would think their environment would be a huge factor in determining that.  So, without knowing what that is, how could we even guess?  But guessing about this subject is fun.

Discount "Jesus was an alien" thread.

We make the assumption for some reason aliens would want to come here. This place is like Haiti after the earthquake. It is too remote for an easy visit, all the resources are used up and everybody thinks religion can fix shit. I for one would avoid.

No, even the universe will die or run out of energy
Quote from: Sting Chameleon on May 10, 2016, 12:59:34 PM#2: If aliens are real could they have written The Holy Bible?
No. If they are intelligent and advanced enough that they have obtained FLT (faster than light travel), they have advanced beyond the ignorance of dieties and all the trappings of the nonsense in the bible or any other so called holy book
Quote from: Sting Chameleon on May 10, 2016, 12:59:34 PM#3: If alien life is advanced enough can they revive the dead?
No. Life as we think of it is our consciousness that exists only in the functioning organ that we call the brain.  Once that has ceased the data is lost.
Quote from: Sting Chameleon on May 10, 2016, 12:59:34 PM#4: If alien life is real can they safely make someone live much longer?
Plausable.  We have also done this through the elimination of disease, and the treatment of others.  But the real key is to somehow cause cell regeneration to continue at the rate it did in our youth.

Good point, well made. I often ask "what do we have that would interest a space-faring race?" The most common answer is "Because we're here!" That begs the question "Is 'being here' special?"

With regard to listening for radio signals: Can you read smoke signals? That "technology" died out less than 200 years ago. What will we be using for signaling in 200 years?

I don't know.  Maybe or maybe not.  What's the point?  Is it that if aliens can do these things, then god is real?  I'd like to see the logical steps one would take from one to the other.

I do not doubt that aliens exist. However, I will not accept that they have been to Earth until one of them knocks on my door, asking to borrow a cup of sugar.
As for your questions - ??? How the hell am I supposed to know?
A thought - before Galileo, it was angels that people swore they saw. Now, it's little gray or green men. No wings, though. And the angels didn't have flying saucers.

I suppose extending your life via advanced technological means is common theme in science fiction... but I have no way to determine anything like that.

QuoteIf aliens are real could they have written The Holy Bible?

If they did, then they must have a perverse and sadistic sense of humour!!!

QuoteIf alien life is advanced enough can they revive the dead?

You believe Jesus was an alien don't you.

QuoteIf alien life is real can they safely make someone live much longer?

How am I supposed to know that?! These are some funny questions.

Given the rate of discovery of new planets ... even habitable planets won't be rare in a galaxy sized constellation.

Wouldn't it be great if we picked up their "Morning Zoo" making fun of us? Laughing at how stupid we are! "Oooo - look at that one! They call him the Pope. He's about to fart, and more than 1 billion of them will tell him how good it smells."

Depending on the sensitivity of receiving gear, somebody out there right now is watching Ozzie and Harriet and Leave It To Beaver. Might get some wrong impressions from that.

It would be great if F Troop were their impression of the Army.

There was a scifi short about aliens finding a reel of film and learning about Earth from that. They were amazed how tough we were. They didn't really understand the Looney Tunes logo at the end, either.

Does this mean a Wascally Wabbit has forestalled invasion?

Sadly, they found the can of film after the ice receded from that Snowball Earth. Basically, at that point "invasion" would have been overkill.

I dont know according to folk lore aliens have some pretty bright light bulbs. Ones so bright the can counter act gravity. That's one impressive light bulb. that's not to say that it has to be a bulb the light source could be mushrooms for all I care.
