Quote from: SGOS on April 09, 2016, 12:44:11 PMIs there enough NCers to bring pressure on the legislators, or will this be corrected by the Supreme Court?  Or is it just a matter of North Carolina evolving over time?
It's different every time something like this happens, but some combination of the above is likely.  This one garnered small protests and a slew of extremely bad press (two words: national embarrassment).  Ordinarily, the Republicans might try to stand their ground and hope it blows over.  But this bill is likely to have a serious economic cost far beyond what the Republicans might be willing to tolerate.   It's only a matter of time until the decision is reversed, one way or another.

Quote from: Johan on April 09, 2016, 02:13:46 PMFor a while there we were taking vacations in the outer banks every year. We found a nice rental house right on the beach that was awesome for us. We loved it.

Then the voters in your state saw fit to amend the state constitution to make same sex marriage illegal. No business in NC has seen a single dime of our vacation budget ever since.
Yes, and it was the 30th (and last) state to do that.  And ~38% voted against it.  And 2 years later, it got struck down.  And the Supreme Court ruling effectively ended the issue once and for all.

QuoteSo I feel your pain if you're living there and also not happy about how things have gone. But give you time to fix it? That gay marriage amendment was like 4 years ago.
And it's been over and done with for a year and a half.

QuoteThe voters of your state have a long track record of proudly hating gay people and nothing seems to be changing.
By and large, they're certainly bigoted, though North Carolina has made the same transition on gay marriage that the country as a whole has made.

Look, Amendment 1 was shitty move.  And obviously, I don't agree with these people about that.  I don't know of many places where I agree with everyone about everything.  But the public's views are changing, both the country and the state - North Carolina changing, too.  This is just the defeated party's last tantrums - it's been going on in Georgia, it's been going on in Mississippi, and it's also been going on in North Carolina.  It will pass.

I hope you're right.

Eventually it will pass, and the bigots will get on with their lives once they realize it's possible to be happy without shitting on other people.

When it comes to most bigots, I just don't think its that simple. I think with lots of them, as long as groups who are not like them exist and enjoy the exact same rights they do, they will always find it impossible to be happy.

I agree.  This is where "death" comes in.  There are some bigoted assholes who will simply always be bigoted assholes.  But some day, they'll die.  Take Scalia, for example.  If he had lived to be a thousand he never would have become less of a douchebag.  But now he's dead and he's not a douche at all any more.  Being dead has made him a better person.  Unfortunately, that's just what it takes for some people.

PayPal?  chicken feed!  The real ban, with real impact, is now underway!  XHampster has banned any person from NC to log on to it's site.  That's porn my friends!  If anything will hurt NC it will be the lose of one of the biggest providers of porn in the world.  How do you really punish the bible-belt states?  Take away their porn!

It just displays an angry popup.  I know because a friend of mine checked it for me.

While I agree with the message, it seems like a bad way of going about it.  Pressure the people who are in charge, not some lowly jagoff (literally).

So.... is it all just hamster on hamster action or do they have hamster on person porn too?

Keep in mind that Paypal's decision is not necessarily punitive in nature.  A large corporation wanting to hang on to the most creative elements of it's workforce, may simply prefer settling in a state where laws are not designed to create hardships for some of its more valuable workers, some of which might be integral parts of the company's management itself.

That may well be the case.  It really doesn't matter to me.  What matters to me is the fascinating implosion of the religious right right now.  They have spent decades telling people that the way to really help America is for the people to lay down in the dirt and let large corporations march right over them, then thank the corporations for any injuries they suffered as a result and now not only are they turning on themselves, not only has their alarmist propaganda turned a large portion of their constituency and, thus, their party into raving lunatics, but now even their precious corporations are turning on them.  It's not big oil or anything, but PayPal isn't exactly a tiny company.  And while they may have private reasoning influencing their decisions, their public reasons are what's important here, especially when others, like Bruce Springsteen, pile it on too.

My quote was in reference to the Xhamster thing.
