And the bathing once a year thing is bullshit.  Early modern Europeans generally took at least weekly baths, though that was bumped up to daily showers as industrialization reached full swing.

And btw, when Americans came to Japan, it was with warships that greatly outclassed anything Japan had at the time.  An understandably worried Japan climbed the tech tree with haste afterwards, but yeah, it's clear from the numerous cultural exchanges between Europeans and Japanese that both sides definitely saw admirable qualities in the other.

I was thinking of the Portuguese and Dutch who first visited Japan in the 16th century. (America isn't in Europe.)

Warfare fuels technological advancement like nothing else. Until Europe decided to colonize and ravage the rest of the world five hundred years ago, European and Asian empires were more or less similar in terms of technology. When Europeans decided to go venturing beyond their continent, they rapidly developed new technologies.

But the white man is beginning to lose that edge he gained in the 16th century, because he's not smart enough to maintain it. The way I see it, the white man did the dirty work of developing technology, and now the asian man will comfortably advance it as he sees fit.

The Greeks and the Romans were excellent people; they bathed daily and the Romans even had indoor plumbing. Once Western Europe fell into the Dark Ages in the sixth century, it would be another 1,400 years before they resumed daily bathing.

You reversed cause and effect.  New technologies fueled colonialism, not the other way around.  At least, not at first.  Though obviously, the resources and wealth obtained through colonialism prompted further technological development.  The Chinese treasure fleet did the same thing before being outlawed.  But unlike China, Europe was fragmented enough that it couldn't be as easily outlawed.
