Normally this wouldn't make a blip on my news radar, but it just so happens that my girlfriends grandson Rigdon goes to this same school and was in the class at the time I believe.  I know he goes to the same school, not sure if he was in the same class .. It's definitely making noise here in Columbia ..

From thestate.com, local Columbia newspaper .. http://www.thestate.com/news/local/crime/article41523774.html
QuoteRichland County Sheriff Leon Lott has asked the FBI and the U.S. Justice Department to investigate an incident between a school resource officer and a female student at Spring Valley High School, which was caught on video Monday and posted online.

Must be some heavy shit going down for the sheriff to request an FBI investigation ..

Of course about half the comments blame the kid, but that's par for the course ..

Having worked with cops in the past, I am not one to label them as a brain trust to begin with. But this is just stupid. Anybody with a brain should be aware of appearances in the ongoing light of racial issues and especially violence against a female. Somebody will point out the likelihood of a huge public outcry if this had been a white girl; maybe, maybe not. But it is still stupid.

By appearances one might think that this is an inner city school, but it's quite an affluent area with a lot of houses going upwards of $250k and up. Strange though,  every school I've seen in the area looks like a prison without the razor wire surrounding it.
Something going on is just recently the area was predominantly white and now it isn't and the shift happened in a very short period of time.
From what I'm hearing and I can't substantiate it people don't like the demographic shift so they're quietly pissed off that their  "white privilege" has been eroded by black families with enough money to live in the area and it's as if the end of the world is here for some because they have a lot of money invested in the houses so in order to join in on white flight they would have to move to far from town where there just aren't enough jobs to keep up their $250k houses.
Personally I like the area and the diversity, but you can see it on the faces of certain people in the area that says what a crying shame it is to have to live around "those people". .  The neighborhood where I live is about half white, half black and a lot of older people with not many kids.  I guess this is the price society has to pay for white flight. Eventually you just run out of rural areas to turn into enclaves that exclude everyone you don't like. Now they have to learn to live with it.  Oh boohoo..

My girlfriends daughter Nellie is a court reporter and took a deposition from the girl in the video .. This ought to get really interesting ..  I really wouldn't be surprised if they wanted to seize the girls cell phone to find some kind of incriminating evidence completely unrelated to what actually happened.

Oh lookee here! She has naked pictures of herself so she must be a gang member ... That's the kind of shit that happens when cops are caught fucking up .. Deflect and blame the victim ..

I'm just imagining the kind of bullshit the media spin might be ..

Of course the deposition has to be in confidence and it would be illegal to post everything publicly, but it's still an interesting case to keep an eye on. I'd love to see that the cops are removed from the schools, but we're being sold on fear of schools being overrun by 'super predators' under every school desk.

My step-daughter was in District I and because she's special education, she ended up at Satchel Ford which is over off of Forest and Trenholm, which as you know is a pretty affluent area. Anyway, there were a surprising amount of poor black kids in that school for being surrounded by quarter of a million dollar houses.

Fun fact: the Forest Lake Country Club is over on the other side of the street, and it's still "whites only" by its charter. I grew up in Texas so I'm rather accustomed to racial strife, but it's just such a different flavor in South Carolina.
How can you be sure my refusal to agree with your claim a symptom of my ignorance and not yours?

Yes it does have quite a different flavor here in SC.  There's an undertone that isn't always so obvious the way it is in other places I've lived. Before I moved here I really expected some very openly hostile environment full of rolly holers just ready to linch anyone who doesn't tow the holy baptist line with a church on every corner, but it's actually really quite laid back for the most part. One thing that is a bit different is the politics here don't in any way mirror the feeling you get interacting with people.  Most people here are usually quite polite even towards me with my long hair.  I was really surprised to find out there are quite a few atheists here which I REALLY didn't expect ..

The cop handled the situation like an absolute shithead, no surprise there, and for that he belongs in jail. Others who belong behind the bars of their own zoos are the school administrator and the police captain who decided to involve police in any matter not regarding law enforcement. It may violate school policy to look at your phone during class, but no cop ever should have been involved in enforcing that absent of a clear and present threat to student safety. Flatfoot cops make the very worst child disciplinarians - d'UHhhh!

He was a school resource officer. Many schools in the states have on duty police officers. So theoretically it was his job to be involved, just not in that way.

If criminal-trained cops are necessary to protect student populations, then post them out in the hall to discourage predators and bring them into the classrooms only when there's a threat to student safety - otherwise, keep them the fuck out and have them escorted by civilians who are trained in dealing with children! This piece of shit most obviously is not.

Something to consider.  Understand, I know nothing----nothing---about this incident.  But it could simply be one more incident in a long line of incidents with this particular student.  My daughter is an administrator in Palo Alto in a large HS.  The stories she tells me of the ways parents defend the conduct of their students is beyond belief.  Recently, my daughter had to detain a student drunk on vodka and unknown drugs, in her room.  She had to call the police and a parent.  The parent insisted that this drunk kid be held in school, since she had an 'important' meeting to go to in another hour.  The police, were somehow persuaded to release the child to parental custody when the parent promised to take the kid to a hospital.  As it turned out, he was taken home by dear old mom.  The kid then posted via his phone, a bloody wrist and told everybody, 'bye-bye'.  My daughter learned of the photos, by some of the students at the school--but dear old mom made her appointment.  The kid has since returned to school--the school is fearful of a law suit from this good mom if they don't take him back.  That he is the son of a skin-head and a self labeled 'Jew hater' matters not.

As a former juvenile hall teacher for 30 years, I can attest to students trying to run my classroom.  They did that by insisting on their 'rights' to this and that.  And to plain strong arm bulling.  What they failed to take into account in my classroom was I had the power to remove them immediately--and I did.  I passed each and every test. (With the help of the JH guards who were in sight at all times, since the classroom walls were made of glass.)  But even I had to write up a sort of after action report and the student could submit in writing a complaint--which some did.  In our regular HS, those type of students could ride a teacher for quite some time before anything could be or would be done.

So, maybe this was just one more incident of this particular student making a power play with this teacher.  Those incidents can be quite ugly and teachers generally have little sway in many schools.  They are sniped at by the darling kids parents and by the administration as well.  There may be no way of knowing what really triggered this incident.
