My theistic friend thinks he had me with Pascal's Wager

Pascal was trying to deal with the secularists of his day (deists).  He was also a Quietist ... the equivalent of a French Quaker ... and so was kind of anti-Catholic as well.  In France at that time, being anti-Catholic or deviant was something you wanted to keep quiet about.

Pascal's wager has obviously not aged well, I suppose because God had no competition at the time is was proposed:

It really does seem kind of stupid now.

When anything becomes fair game for Homer Simpson to comment on, there's a good chance it's something stupid.  Not that Homer is that brilliant, but when things get stupid enough to be on his level, he sometimes has something insightfully simple to offer about them.

Yes, sometimes the stupid are profoundly intelligent on some things.
There are two types of ideas: fact and non-fact. Ideas which are not falsifiable are non-fact, therefore please don't insist your fantasies of supernatural beings are in any way factual.

Doctrine = not to be questioned = not to be proven = not fact. When you declare your doctrine fact, you lie.

http://www.godchecker.com/ The fact that there are several thousand deities from which to choose, alone proves that Pascal's Wager is utter tosh. You could spend your life worshiping different gods and still never get the right one.

In France it was easier ... the French only worship Frenchness ;-)
