Munch, I like those two articles. Good points. Better comparisons. Also new questions.

It comes down to regulate guns much better and their training in general, I guess.

I wouldn't ordinarily post a link to a thread on another forum, but it is our sister forum af.org. the topic is definitely relevant to the OP so here goes.

Has anybody ever called 9-1-1 and asked the dispatcher to send them a hippie?

I think they'd probably shoot the hippie accusing him of drug possession

The person calling 9-1-1 would shoot the hippie they asked for...

Regarding mental health and guns ...

Years ago, in the US the state had the power to lock people up for being "different".  This power was abused, so in the US, the mentally challenged got their civil rights in the early 1970s.  The preferred option was outpatient treatment with meds ... rather than incarceration in a "One Flew Over The Coocoo's Nest" institution.  As soon as that happened, some of the more unstable patients went out and knifed a few people to death.  Went from being a medical problem to being a criminal problem.  But the state enjoyed cutting the money they were spending on the country sanitarium.  Part of this was driven by the philosopher Foucault.

There is currently a proposal, post Sandy Hook ... to assess the mental capacity of every American, on a regular basis, and prohibit firearms possession by those deemed insufficiently capable of responsible possession.  Basically all seniors, veterans and disabled would loose their guns, if they have any.

How the fuck would "all seniors, veterans and disabled" loose their guns, if any?

Gosh, it's almost as though a preponderance of a particular weapon results in more use of that weapon.

Godzilla Sama ... well it would be hard to enforce (as all gun control is) ... but basically a return to conditions of the 1960s mental health but on steroids.  All the nut cases would be locked up, and all the seniors and veterans warehoused in an institution.  I am sure our for profit prison industry is shovel ready ;-(

This is of course a neo-lib agenda ... tyranny for your own good.

The original post Sandy Hook proposal ... or my "reading between the lines"?

California example:
http://smartgunlaws.org/mental-health-related-prohibited-categories-in-california/

Given the known mental condition of seniors and veterans ... if this was enforced consistently then yes, seniors and veterans, along with people in the more medical categories listed, would have to be prohibited.  But to do that, given gun shows, you would have to institutionalize them.  Of course there is a general denial that the US suffers from severe mental illness in all walks of life.  I can think of many folks, other than say veterans, that I would ban from owning a spork ... if you just saw the light and made me dictator ... bwahaha!

What starts in California, doesn't stay in California:
http://www.ncsl.org/research/civil-and-criminal-justice/possession-of-a-firearm-by-the-mentally-ill.aspx

So doing this, could have prevented several mass shootings, including Sandy Hook.  It may also be necessary for the DSM-V to characterize extreme political opinion as mental illness ... in order to cordon off the recent church shooter from the rest of society.

Solitary

The idea that all mental illness means these people having it are killers is based on a stereotype that is not true in the least. Most people that kill are your normal everyday girl or guy that has a meltdown. This myth was perpetuated by politicians that wanted to save money by not giving the mentally ill what they needed, and were more than willing to privatize prisons. Just because someone is different doesn't mean they are mentally ill either just because society and some psychiatrist think so. It wasn't that long ago that psychiatrist thought lesbians and gays were mentally ill because society wouldn't accept them and ostracized them to the breaking point and they committed suicide. Bigotry, prejudice, and blind hatred are the real mental illnesses that is perpetuated by religious teachings and politicians.
There is nothing more frightful than ignorance in action.

Solitary ... I tend to agree with you.  But politicians are going to use any excuse they can find, to channel Richard Nixon et al.  Not even a Catholic priest could exorcise the power, wealth and fame out of a politician.  Mammon is just too strong.  The priests had better stick to monstrous little girls.
