Most movies are based in some form of fantasy. Fast and Furious for example. John Wick, Battle God! for another.

Miss out on a lot of movie fun by being too b/w about what you see.
We 'new atheists' have a reputation for being militant, but make no mistake  we didn't start this war. If you want to place blame put it on the the religious zealots who have been poisoning the minds of the  young for a long long time."

"A tyrant must put on the appearance of uncommon devotion to religion. Subjects are less apprehensive of illegal treatment from a ruler they consider god-fearing and pious. On the other hand, they do less easily move against him, believing that he has the gods on his side."

Yes, perhaps. Fantasy is great, but our culture is uber preconditioned to regurgitate the christ and god characters over and over, ad nauseum. Usually at the expense of a "faithless" scientist, skeptic or atheist who needs a lesson. "Contact" was a great movie right up until I perceived it was suggesting that faith is just as important as science and reason. They did invoke the hardcore religious fundamentalist as the bad guy against science, but the soft-core religious philosopher (Matthew McConaughey) was the good guy. That sits much better with the box office sales than a movie which portrays the nice Christian guy as a full-of-shit dork.

The fight between good and evil forces involving all sort fantasy don't need pull tightly from big-time religious arcs, unless the writer is intentionally preaching or is just lazy.

I find reality (aka "mundanity") boring, so the further removed the more I like it. "Secret Level" is a good anthology in that range. Available online.

I just saw "Iron Lung" for the second time today. Quick synopsis first. The movie is based on an indie video game by the same name. It's an eldritch horror sci-fi. The idea is there was this event called the "Quiet Rapture," where every habitable planet and every star suddenly vanished. The only people left are those who were in space at the time. The main character is a convict, sent to explore a moon in a tiny, makeshift sub called the Iron Lung. By exploring this moon, he is promised he can earn his freedom back. But the moon is very strange. Mainly, it's covered in an ocean of blood.

I originally saw it two days ago, on the opening night, and I thought it was okay. Something was up with the sound, and it was very quiet in general. Decided to give it another try, at a different theater. Same thing. Very quiet. Somebody needs to tell these people to crank it up. lol

But I did enjoy it much more on second viewing. And I'll probably enjoy it even more when I can properly hear everything at home.

I give the movie an 8/10. It's not for everyone, but I recommend seeing it if you like horror and want to see something unique. And if you see it, try to sit 2/3rds of the room away from the screen for the best sound. Most of the movie takes place in one room; the sub. It's almost all practical effects, with the set on hydraulics that allow it to jostle around. It looks amazing. The cinematography is masterful. The acting is good. As someone who's squeamish, I was worried about the gore going in, but it didn't bother me.

Some things that will turn some people off: The pacing is slow. It takes its time building up the atmosphere and expects the viewer to be actively paying attention. It's less scary and more disturbing and disorienting. The movie doesn't give you all the answers, but expects you to think about it and come to your own conclusions. Personally, on second viewing, I think some things are more clear to me, as I've noticed things I hadn't the first time.

I think some are quick to dismiss this movie, because it's made by a YouTuber. Specifically, Markiplier. However, while this may be Mark's first movie, he's built up a lot of the necessary skills over the years. Acting, directing, editing, he's done all this before. And he was previously nominated for an Emmy for his work on "In Space With Markiplier." On top of that, unlike a lot of other YouTubers, Mark is actually a really good guy and is easy to root for.

IGN gave this movie a 4/10, but that has me like:

"Oh, wearisome condition of humanity,
Born under one law, to another bound;
Vainly begot, and yet forbidden vanity,
Created sick, commanded to be sound."

I saw Zardoz last week, and at the time it was the weirdest movie I'd ever seen. But today I saw Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, and it was far more weird than Zardoz! I don't think it would be possible to make a movie more weird than that! Lucky for me I dearly love weird movies! 🤗
