An outbreak of chlamydia at a high school in Texas has forced administrators there to send a warning note home to parents.

District officials confirmed to CBS7 last Friday that the Crane Independent School District has seen 20 cases of the sexually transmitted disease in its high school, adding that letters have also been sent to the district's junior high school as a precaution.

The station estimates 1 in 15 students at the school has contracted chlamydia.

The high school offers a three-day sexual education course once a year that emphasizes abstinence.

Per the school's 2014-2015 handbook, Crane ISD "does not offer a curriculum in human sexuality," but the handbook does lay out state-mandated stipulations should a curriculum be needed in the future:

In a conversation with the San Antonio Express-News on Monday, school superintendent Jim Rumage defended the abstinence-heavy course.

"That's not a bad thing," said Rumage, "because if kids are not having any sexual activity, they can't get this disease. That's not a bad program."

Diana Martinez, a Crane resident and parent, told NewsWest 9 her kids are too young for her to worry about; otherwise, she'd sit them down and have a talk.

"Honestly this happens in any town," Martinez said. "Parents need to be aware of the situation and make sure they tell their kids to be safe and practice safe sex."

The school's health advisory committee met Monday to discuss the outbreak and formulate a response, which it will present to the school board on May 19.

I think it is too much to expect traditional/religious idiots to get that kids should be educated on consequences of having unprotected sex. If they educate them and provide them with condoms, contraceptives ...etc, they would be surprised how fast teenage STD and pregnancy rate would drop. Other than that taboo or not, everybody masturbates. Taboo status is effective on talking about it and of course, pretend not doing it at all.

I was never given any sexual education on what gay men do together, and had to figure it out for myself years later from school, my school which seperated boys and girls up to learn about the opposite sexes genitalia.
I hope nowadays teachers aren't so afraid to teach in sex education what same sex copulation involves.

When we had sex ed in middle school (this was Georgia, mind you),  It took two or three days for an hour of each day. The lady doing the presentation told us that her cousin was a proctologist and the gay men that came in all had distended or prolapsed anuses, and "a man's penis is not supposed to go in there." This is the same class where they show you all the STDs in order to scare you away from sexual contact with anyone, ever.

Amusingly, the day they talked about male reproductive organs, lunch was corn dogs, and the next day when we had a discussion about lady parts, lunch was Hot Pockets.

None of this is surprising.  Allen Texas had a much worse outbreak of syphilis in the high school a few years ago.  The rich mommys and daddy's gave the kiddies the keys to the mansions while they were out of town on business and not surprisingly they had a huge outbreak aa a result of after school activities the sexually completely uneducated were engaged in which from reports included huge completely unsupervised orgies with about half of the entire high school..
By the way it's also how they teach kids about the dangers of war.. Just pretend it's all fun and games and you can just hit the reset button..

Luckily in my school not only was safe sex taught condoms were actually given out for free in the nurses office. I wish birth control pills were too though. I'd thoroughly support it.

Teaching abstinence is driven by christian beliefs, or perhaps denial of reality caused by christianity.

Another example of how dangerous organized religion is to society.

Knowledge is power, and christianity fears the power people have, when they are knowledgeable about the reality of the real world.
