Her claim was that the very premature baby died shortly after it was born and she panicked and threw the body in the dumpster. Pretty plausible. I think the grayness surrounding baby being dead at the time was the part that got her convicted.
They went with the expert testimony that said that the baby's lungs floated on water (meaning they had inflated) so this was enough to convince the jury that it was alive when she put it in the trash. Which is still crap. The baby needed to take one breath to inflate the lungs, so it doesn't tell any story at all and should not have been admissible, but whatever.

Premature baby born to woman who panics apparently = 20 years in prison and pitchforks/torches.
