Reddit is a shithole for fuelling the worst of humanity. I'm never going to make an account with it. I'd sooner dip into the dark net and study that goes on there then make a Reddit account.
That's a pretty broad generalization. r/atheism is not representative of the vast majority of Reddit, which is generally a nice place to be. Plus, your preferences can be adjusted so you don't have to see the more toxic or nsfw stuff. Most of the more popular subs, such as r/IAmA and r/todayilearned are actually very good at self-moderating. Better-moderated subs like r/TrueAtheism are also quite good to look at.

Reddit is very much a reflection of the rest of the internet: the more hot-button a topic you look for, the more toxic the comments are generally going to be, especially if users are left to self-moderate.

That definitely depends on the subreddit....

I've seen VERY friendly communities there. When I was following and researching bitcoin, the bitcoin subreddits were super friendly.  Same goes with r/art and a bunch of other ones. I think the only subreddit that I have really seen really negative postings was r/atheism and r/dota2... and the only time I saw it in r/dota2 was when I was getting trolled by that guy for one of my sketches I submitted.

I got a couple of questions/replies for a lot of the people in this thread:

1) How do you guys not know about reddit?  Coma?  Rural town that just now got internet access?  Recent arrival from a parallel Earth where Digg reigns supreme?

Cause if you have any hobbies or anything that interests you at all, I guarantee there's a subreddit out there on that stuff like white on rice.  And I don't know what I would've done without r/pcgaming or r/historyporn (disclaimer:  not actual porn, just really fascinating glimpses of the past, like colorized Civil War photos and casual photos of people in the 1950s)

Go forth and expand your horizons!

2) Why the hate for reddit?  "Worst of humanity"?!  Do you even 4chan?  And 4chan arguably isn't even the absolute worst.  There's some crazy stuff out there, man.  If reddit shocks you, then you've lived a sheltered life.

Possible?  Yes.  Probable?  No.  Seems pretty genuine to me, though of course, it's impossible to know for sure.

I didn't mean posers, Christians pretending to be atheists.  I meant more like proselytizers that are also assholes.  Like I said, I've never been there.  But, I just surmised that there would be a Christian proselytizing faction in the group.  And that perhaps some of the negative ranking came from those.

Thing about Reddit is that it has a zillion subreddits and all manner of topics to discuss. Worth your time just to go to the front page and check out world news, news, science or any possible sub topic. Navel lint fetishist? you might find something. And because of the huge membership you get opinions from all over, and many, many professionals that give advice on topics ELI5-explain like I'm 5- budgeting, science, why shit works the way it does, you name it.

President Obama and just about any celebrity you can think of has done an AMA on there. So somebody thinks they have value. They also have financially supported atheist groups and Planned Parenthood, among other organizations.

As I said previously they have the largest and fastest growing ex-mormon forum. I spend time there discussing and counseling people who left Mormonism, because leaving a cult is pretty trauma inducing. Reddit has value. Don't discount it out of hand.
