Fear. Every time an Islamic terrorist makes an attack of any kind in a liberal environment, reactionary people revert to what they see as Islam's natural enemy, Christianity. Nazism makes a resurgence for the same reason. Conservatism is about control. People want more control, conservatism becomes a useful idea.

Sad, but true.  Fear can make people give up their own liberty in preference of a 'safer' but less free environment.
