Young Catholics Deserting The Faith

What an unusual TV show. I know he said they also talk about the positive stuff, but that sounded pretty grim if you're Catholic.

This is ironic for so many reasons. Running a fundraiser tape under the broadcast like Pat Robertson, pointing out the failure of the church, demanding a return to the "roots" of the religion, and at no point ever actually addressing whether there is any real truth in their belief.

He says "say the truth," but the "truth" is never actually brought out or dealt with. This is so typical of the sermons I sat through; demanding of the congregation, but never actually debating the truth of the faith.

I replied to this yesterday, but either I or the editor didn't post it. I had the same thought when he said "say the truth." What is that exactly, and who determines it? He sounds like he knows exactly what it is. But he wants someone else to deliver it to him. There's something in that that jars my head, but I can't put my finger on why it should.

OK, in trying to come to an understanding of my odd discomfort with his admonition, I think this might explain it: A church, no matter what it claims it does, cannot say the truth. Even if its finest minds have debated the issue and come to a consensus, the best it can do is say an agreed upon doctrine of belief. A church is nothing more than a body of men and has no more access to truth than any other organization of men.

So when it comes to issues like the Catholic position on abortion, there is no more truth in that position than there is in the pro choice position. Both are simply positions of preference, and to make claims beyond that is just blowing smoke up someone's ass.

I think that explains at least some of what bothered me. It may be more complicated than that too, but at least I feel some closure.

There is nothing more frightful than ignorance in action.

I logged on this guy's website and looked at other stuff. He is doing the same with every topic, including where the bible came from, which I will watch. He is completley sidestepping the issue of whether it is actually true or not while calling it the truth. And he is addressing his topics to protestants vs catholics, also sidestepping the issue of the real truth.

SGOS

He seems to be affiliated with the Catholic Church, but he sounds like he's a loose cannon.

The C's need to really worry about the old folks leaving in droves.. My family was once heavily Catholisized, but when grandma told em to piss off they lost all of us in one fell swoop.

I feel this needs some extended commentary. What reason did she have to say that, though I might hazard a guess.

After giving untold dollars to the syndicate over the years she finally asked her church for help in her old age and was turned down flat. I guess 90+ years of prayers and tithings are just never enough. She didn't whip herself across her own back with barbed wire I guess..

This is why we must always campaign to keep church and state/government separate

LOL "The gift of Jesus' salvation flows from us to you. That's what we give you, and you get to keep it. But we can't help you with financial aid now that you are destitute. While we can still assure your salvation, the money is gone. We are not sure where, but we don't have it anymore. We can continue to tell you that your salvation is still assured, at least if the church doesn't go bankrupt and have to close. We are sorry your money ran out. I sounds like a real bummer. And no, you can't give your salvation back to us so you can have your money. That wouldn't be good for the people at the Vatican who are working overtime making sure you don't go to Hell."

Now wait a minute--wasn't that backwards????
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent,
Is he able but not willing?
Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able or willing?
Then why call him god?
