I've done that route.  I stayed overnight in Charleston.  Can't remember what Beckley looked like, but I remember that I went through it (or by it).

How are the winters in WV?

They can be pretty rough in the higher elevations and the northern part of the state.  WV has arguably the best skiing in the east.  Snowshoe is the largest ski resort in the state.  Once you get down into the valleys the winters are fairly mild.  The Kanawha and Ohio river valley areas south of Parkersburg see about 11 - 30 inches a year.
