I didn't get any of that. Probably not that big a fan of Chess.

I know how the pieces move, and a small amount of strategy. I don't watch more than 2 hours of TV, the news. Any references to movies are usually lost on me, given I watch maybe one movie a year. You're not alone with not "getting" these associations.

Well, to quote Lo Pan, from Big Trouble in Little China, "You are not brought upon this world to 'get it.'"

Just saying that the characters deteriorate as the game progresses.

Basically, in the early game, pawns are in serious danger (since they're the first pieces to fall) but block units in the middle game and become queens in the late game.  Knights "fork" other pieces in the middle game.  Bishops and rooks and queens are initially useless and held in reserve, but are lethal in the middle and late game.  And the King is completely idle in the early game, frequently threatened in the middle game (hence The Shining "here's Jonny!" scene), but can unexpectedly be somewhat powerful in the late game when most other pieces have been cleared from the board.

Play go. It sounds far more logical. I sometimes try with online AIs, unfortunately it needs a lot of practice and work like any good thing. I naturally don't possess the required patience. But it's pretty cool.

There was a book on go written by a couple of French go masters, mocking chess as a board game flexing one's brain. Apparently, it doesn't. You can just memorise it. But It's been a long time, can't remember the name.

I like Twixt and Lines of Action, both easy to understand, but complex to play.
Then there's Feudal, a game similar to chess, but more complicated.
