Which still doesn't mean things don't change. Coelacanth hasn't changed much in 400 million years, but there are currently 2 distinct living that diverged about 20 million years ago. Genetic drift and geographic seperation are a thing.

Yeah, but if genetic drift breaks things enough, the line ends. When you look at the success rate, extinction of a species is the nominal result. Of course, a couple hundred million years is pretty dam good! And then came us...
