I've lived in the US my entire life and I couldn't tell you how many fluid ounces are in a gallon without looking it up.

Hell, I have to bookmark a complex conversion chart in order to bake a pie.  But dividing stuff by 10 is supposedly too difficult.

Thing is, you don't need to know how many fluid ounces compose a gallon.

My ship was parked between Victoria and Kowloon side once and the gov was delivering fresh water. The ensign in charge of receiving the water didn't know how much we were getting. I asked him what did the bargemen say?

"20 metric tons."

"And a gallon is 8.34 pounds."

"So it's 2,372 tons?"

"No, because a metric ton is 2.2 imperial tons.

"So, that 44,000 pounds of water?"

"You're on track."
