Vegetarians eat plants, which are in the plant kingdom. They refuse animals, which are in the animal kingdom. That means they eat life just like all other animals do.

Bacteria, viruses, and protozoa are not in the animal kingdom, so vegetarians are not forbidden to eat them.

That's the joke. Maybe I could see a super hardcore Jain worry about something like that, but a vegetarian? Nope. And to be perfectly honest, anyone seriously concerned about ingesting bacteria has got to be insane. Bacteria live and die in huge numbers in the body just as a matter of course. This is water "purity" marketing run amok.
