More like "not productive". Barren, IMNSHO, would the Sahara. Or Arrakis. Even there, in places it produces.

"Fallow" was the word I was looking for.  Barren implies permanent unproductivity, though not necessarily.

Fallow means "resting" IIRC. Crop rotation in the early stages.

1. Fallow. Allow whatever wants to, pretty much, to grow there without harvesting anything.
2. Feeding. Animals graze on the production from last year's fallow time. (Yay! Free fertilizer!)
3. Growing. (Intentional agriculture rather than the "whatever" in #1.)

By deliberately not using 1/3 of the land the peasants/serfs actually produced more than before the system was implemented.
