Morrowind is a harsh mistress.  Cool gear is nothing without the skills to back it up.

I try to get people to imagine it like this: just handing a random guy a .50 cal sniper rifle won't make him an expert sniper.  Only when he has lots of training and experience will he be a good sniper.

You gotta shoot tin cans before you can shoot dragons.

Bruh! It's an RPG! How do you not know your stats?

In Morrowind, specifically, you're going to miss every hit early on. I think you stop missing when your weapon skill reaches level 50, and that can take a while. You gotta start on easy targets, like mudcrabs.

Vainly begot, and yet forbidden vanity,

I'll be honest, usually how many stats i need to keep an eye one proportionally makes dislike game more.
- your health is at 80%
- your shields are at 25%
- you are just at the edge of what you can carry, three more punds and you ar encumbered
- and you just drank radiated water, putting that toxic score higher.
- and your machine-gun can only be fired 7 more times before you need to spend 20% of your curreny money to fix it.
- and your shoes are wearing out
- and you should putt some gains into intelligence so you can do some better negotiating
- but don't neglect strength, cause you know, encumberance
- and you should wztch out, one more infraction and that faction will hate you.
-...

Like, dude, hand me my gun or sword and let me kill something. If i wanted a chore list, i'd ask the missus
"If we have to go down, we go down together!"
- Your mum, last night, requesting 69.

I used to "swing .50s in a power tub" on a PBR on the Mekong. I had plenty of training, enough to shoot between our boys as they came shagging-ass back to the bank for a ride home. I did cheat a bit, I knew a one-legged Marine who had a .50 and I shoveled his horse stalls for trigger time. Got pretty good. He was amazing with that thing. Commandant awarded it to him. I can only imagine what his skill level would be if our tally floated over our heads like in the games.

I agree that overly-complicated systems are annoying, and I'm not a huge fan of survival/durability stats, but I will definitely go to bat for attributes and skills.  Those essentially tell you what your character is like and what they're good at - i.e. your role.  The R in RPG.

And I love faction systems, especially if they're mutually exclusive.  Can't be friends with everyone.  And different political philosophies naturally comflict.  They just need to keep it simple.
