The media being largely owned by billionaires doesn't help.  Lots of sanewashing this year.

We 'new atheists' have a reputation for being militant, but make no mistake  we didn't start this war. If you want to place blame put it on the the religious zealots who have been poisoning the minds of the  young for a long long time."

What is sane washing?  Is that a new thing?
"his philosophy was a mixture of three famous schools -the cynics, the stoics and the epicureans-and summed up all three of them in his famous phrase, 'you can't trust any bugger further than you can throw him, and there's nothing you can do about it, so let's have a drink.'" terry pratchett

"Sanewashing is the act of minimizing the perceived radical aspects of a person or idea in order to make them appear more acceptable to a wider audience. "

So technically, in the most possible un-sane washed look, it's anything done after Edward Bernays? Meaning, the term sane washing was actually sane washed before anyone realized it?

I wonder how many people have blamed illusionists and magicians for that kind of overview a century ago?

These are all bad for our sanity. Thinking in general, I mean. It's bad.

The term is new, but not the activity.  Essentially, it's a PR/propaganda technique where radical viewpoints are presented in more generally-acceptable terms through euphemistic language or just plain lying by presenting a less radical position.  It's a way to get a position more support than it would otherwise receive if it were simply stated outright and accurately.

It crops up more frequently recently because news media must summarize statements that various people make, and accusations of sanewashing pop up when the summary bears little similarity to the statements being summarized.  For example, if I were to suggest that poor families should sell their children into slavery to make ends meet, I might be quoted as promoting "ingenious, out-of-the-box thinking" by which I would help poor families "leverage their assets and minimize dependents" to achieve "financial solvency".

Thought it came from the term brainwashing.

But rather than convincing someone that the earth is flat or that the great leader is a deity... you convince someone that when the great leader says something batshit crazy like 'windmills kill all the birds!' You show only the good clips and provide context which obviously shows that that leader is actually making a decent point about the hypocricy of extreme left-wing environmentalist hippie communists.

That's what I said, whitewashing them. Covers up the defects in their thinking.

I think maybe there is a cultural difference in the meaning of the term 'whitewashing' between us.

Edit; looked it up.
There indeed is your meaning of the word.
And then there is the practice of having white people playing people of other ethnicities. Which, allong withe the idea of systemic undervalueing the input and contributions of non-caucasians, was how i interpreted that word.
Sorry for the confusion

Ah, yes. US here. The term is used to imply that the defects are still there just barely covered up. (Whitewash can be considered very thin paint for this discussion.)
