Sashimi is raw fish.  Sushi isn't necessarily raw fish.

Generally speaking in the US, sushi is generally safe to eat.  The main problem is actually the rice reaching room temperature when it sits around for too long, cultivating bacteria.  Generally speaking, cold sushi (or fried sushi) is no problem for people with unimpaired immune systems.

Personally, I love sushi.  I don't think there's an adequate way to explain it other than "meat candy" - the flavor combinations are truly mouth-watering.  A light and juicy treat.  It's unfortunate that it also has to be a rare treat due to mercury and overfishing issues.
