Automobile insurance is also mandatory and for very good reasons.
The fines you pay exist because people without insurance still make use of emergency care and are not paying their bills. The same thing occurs in auto insurance and that's why it's mandatory. Free riders cost everyone.

When measured against other insurance schemes universal health care costs less and provides better results. Why would that be a step in the wrong direction?
