Personally, the drab color scheme is a worse historical crime than the infamous horned vikings trope.  At least that one can be potentially explained as attempted intimidation or something.  Military uniforms, with some exceptions, should be bright and colorful up until the mid-19th century, which is where they started to decline, but didn't completely decline until WWI.

The Spanish conquistadors (circa mid 1500s) left some artifacts here in Florida. There is a treasure museum near here and the Spanish suit of armor is tiny, like it would fit on a modern 6th grader. I Googled it and.....

Spanish conquistadors were relatively short by modern standards, averaging around 5'3" (160 cm), though some sources suggest even shorter averages like 4'8", making them appear smaller than the indigenous people they encountered, who were often described as "giants" for being a few inches taller, sometimes over 6 feet, due to better nutrition.

Imagine casting physical size correctly in a conquistador movie. Lucky for them they had that armor, cannons, tech and pestilence, otherwise they would have gotten their asses kicked

Small stature was relatively common in much of europe at that time.  Napoleon is often depicted as a dwarf when in reality, he was around 5'6", which was pretty much average at the time.

While I do appreciate some attempt at historical realism, I don't think it's a great idea to cast for height or hygiene or similar minutiae - I don't think moviegoers will be too broken up about an actor being 5'11" or using shampoo and toothpaste or being from Cordoba while the character was from Castille.

But I don't think Hollywood should go to the other extreme and give up entirely, wrapping everything in black, grey, and brown - which neither thrills audiences nor represents history well.  And it's especially strange for directors to not have an eye for color, considering they're working in a visual medium.

In your image, there's plenty of red, orange, and brown - giving a distinct visual identity to this spanish expedition.  Now imagine the camera cuts to a british expedition in their distinctive red coats, now the audience has a clear visual distinction between the spanish expedition and the british expedition.  Now imagine that they're both clad in the dullest grays imaginable and engaged in pitched hand-to-hand combat.  That'd be a bit disappointing, not to mention confusing.

Color in "uniforms" was useful in the day. Helped you know which people to try to kill in your basic melee.

I don't feel like that, 'cause I can be pretty sure that the melon felon won't be with us by the end of the year.

Unfortunately, that means we'll be stuck with JD, but he won't be nearly as popular or influential as the melon felon.

I have no faith in humanity, much less Americans, to turns things around. Maybe Trump will have a heart attack tomorrow. Yay... Now we can pretend that everything is back to normal and not bother addressing any of the systematic issues Trump exploited. The Christian nationalists and right-wing fascists will realize they lost and go home. And we all live happily ever after.

Vainly begot, and yet forbidden vanity,
Created sick, commanded to be sound."

Yeah, I know, Trump's just a symptom, but I want him 6' under anyway.
