Good questions. If you read the article, this is how they determined the religious status of the participants:

QuoteParticipants provided information about age, gender, ethnicity, and religious affiliation, as well as measures of belief in God, political attitudes, and subjective socioeconomic status. Participants rated belief in God, from 0 (God definitely does not exist) to 100 (God definitely exists).

That is a huge scale, and that leaves questions like: if someone enters 33 on that scale, is he an atheist? A third atheist?? What about a score of 75? Is he is three-quart of the time a theist and one-quart of the time an atheist?  You can see there is a huge problem with such a scale, and it definitely renders the analysis blurry, to say the least.

Yeah, I don't like applying fuzzy logic to a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive binary.  A 33% atheist exists in the same manner that a 33% non-smoker exists.
