Just now on another atheist website, and we are mostly pretty liberal socially for the most part, was a very disappointing response from a gay rights supporter, "It shouldn't be about his sexuality" And all I could think was "NO SHIT" but how am I making it about that by pointing out his "firstness" in this?

Same shit I hate when other atheists say "I don't make my atheism an issue". Right, so the way to fight bigotry is to remain silent to placate the insecurities of bigots?

I really wanted to punch this atheist in the face. You look at the video of when he got word he was drafted. If he had been straight kissing a girlfriend no one would bat an eye. But suddenly when he does the same gay supporters like me are making it an issue? How? Instead of attacking me for supporting him how about attacking the fuckwads who want him to hide what he is?
I understand the desire to make a cultural leap forward and have all of this be a non-issue. It isn't exactly realistic today, but it's certainly the goal.

As for atheists being quiet about it, I do it for reasons of self-preservation. I'd rather be silent about it than lose my job. Can you blame me for that?

And for the record, Brian, I agree with you, I think it's a very important "first" to be celebrated.

Brian, I understand the frustration and have already seen with perspective that maybe that person is not gay so he/she doesn't experience the stigma that we gays have been through. It's the same really as the scene of gay/lesbian kissing in my country that has always been cut, while straight kissing can be fully presented. It's... saddening and heartbreaking but that's the reality of heteronormative society.

But to be fair, yes, he should not be drafted just because he's gay. They should do that because he fucking deserve to be drafted, aka he's a beast in how he plays in the field. The thing that media highlights is probably even though he deserves to be drafted, he's always had a chance to not be drafted just for the fact that he is gay.

It'll be interesting to see how this turns out for the Rams as well as the player.  I read somewhere that under 10% of guys drafted that late make it in the NFL.  The guys on the small side and a bit slow for NFL standards.  I'd hate to see the Rams cut him cause he can't contribute and face a backlash for it.  That would make it that much harder for the next gay player.  Look at how the fundies went nuts when it turned out Tebow couldn't hang.

Even stranger about that is that nearly every NFL team today is dominated by fundamentalist evangelical xtians. Now it seems that not only was Teabow run out on a rail for being a man of god, but now the evangelicals can say, "See? We accept gay people, but to bad he's just not good enough to play pro football. " A huge part of me smells a rat in this whole thing. Maybe I'm just being passive aggressive paranoid. But don't forget, Donald Sterling isn't a racist. Isn't that the important thing here?

Oh knock me over with the family feather! Ken Blackwell of the Family Research Counsel was on CNN suggesting Michael Sam is using his kiss "as a personal prophylactic to make sure he's never cut from the NFL". Leave it up to the pious to never concoct a conspiracy theory.

Yes, because gay people never kiss their partners during times of great joy. That have never happened I'm the history of ever. When I get home from Iowa me and my boyfriend will just shake hands. We only kiss when straight people are watching, never as an expression of love.

Ok, so.. integrate football then baseball, now we got gays. Sam has a good year, more players will come out and then..... Yeehaw! Homophobe owners be a dancin' in skirts at gay proms just to attract new players. Progress.

Kinda funny, because one of my heroes, Vince Lombardi, had a gay brother. Lombardi was one of the people that stood firm against bgiotry in football. Loved him then, revere him now.

I almost expected the Cincinnati Bengals to sign him to follow up on the tradition of Paul Brown, but Cincinnati is the Alabama of Ohio.
